Goldy says hi.
« on: September 17, 2010, 02:59:59 PM »
Here's Goldy (still trying out names). I'm the second owner. The original tank turned into a sprinkler after I cleaned out the rust, so new paint and tank. Other than that all stock. I did the usual with a bike that's been sitting, and that's about it.

few quick questions:
1) it's kinda a stiff throttle pull. I've lubed the cables, but i get some serious hand cramping on the commute to work. Any mod for this, ie mellower throttle spring at the carb?
2) mine is real cold blooded, but that's normal right?
3) source for cheap tank trim?
4) anyone know where I can get mx like soft waffle grips, but streetbike size?

As far as the throttle goes, I think I've heard of aftermarket cables being more stubborn than the more expensive OEM ones...

Search throttle and OEM or Honda...

For nice cushy grips look up oury. They are bicycle grips but comfortable as all get up on long rides and easy to come by at about 10 bucks at your local bicycle shop.

Thanks guys. my idea with the waffle grips is that i think my hand is tired from having to grab the grip too tight, otherwise at 75mph or so it wants to return to the throttle stop position, and i'm holding it tight to keep from slipping back. thought was with the waffle it wouldn't want to slide back as easily.

oh one more:
5) anyone know of a quick turn throttle mod? the four is so smooth, i think it could definitly use a more aggressive profile on the throttle tube.

don't worry, I'll do a search too on that and the oem cables. as far as i know mine are oem, which means 40 years old!

+1 on oury grips.  They do make them for motorcycles.

To change the throttle, just use Hondaman's suggestion.  Wrap some fine wire in the groove to build it up.  Just make sure you don't use to much, or the cable can run out of its groove.  Not good. ;)

There was a recent post about using auto edge trim for the chrome.  Should be able to find it with 'search'.

Thats funny. the grand tourismo's definitly look the biz and are cheap but I can't stand em. And I love the waffle's on all my other race bikes. different strokes...

Brilliant suggestion on hondaman's wrapping the throttle tube with wire! wonder if safety wire is too thick?

I used the very fine stainless safety wire, you don't need much to get a change.  Make sure you wrap it in the same direction the cable goes.

A quick turn throttle will be even harder to twist and hold; you have less leverage.

Should probably add to Scotty's comment, that it will make the bike less 'friendly' if your doing commuter riding.

What is nice about Hondaman's mod. is its variable; and if you don't like the results, its easy to go back to stock. ;)

FWIW

When you get your throttle sorted out, search < Rykel Industries > , click on "Crampbuster" and look it over. $10 delivered.

I like mine! It catches the heel of your hand, ads a bit of leverage and is really comfortable - even on long runs. Easy on, easy off and easy adjustment. It is easily worth more than the $10 in hand comfort. My throttle works easily enough. My ol' hand would still get tired of holding it open on long runs. Works gooood!

Bet you would like it on your commute.

No, I ain't sellin' 'em. Just thought it worth a "mention".

May we all ride safely with a wide grin.

Thanks all, I put quicker throttles on my race bikes. I find it makes less of a strain since you have to move your arm alot less. I'm also used to having a lot more power down low, so having quicker access to the power the bike has will be a welcome change. After riding only singles i'm not worried about it feeling twitchy. I havn't owned a sohc four in about 10 years so I'm trying to get used to a four again.

I ordered up some oury grips, thanks for the tip, they look sweet! i'll try the throttle mod, and take it from there.

I've used four hundred 4 bars in the past but would like a little more leverage and something different. I'm toying with the idea of some old bsa bars. I wanted to like the stockers but feel like a little forward lean would help alot of the freeway. Plus a tiny bit of custom would be nice as well.

i used this on a ride from oakland ca to the copper canyon in mexico and back via baja. the best "mod" ever. i tried one that held the throttle open with a latch but that was too scary on the freeway, this one is instant off as soon as you let go.

I'm sorry, forgot to mention I had a older cramp buster that I couldn't get used to. It had the velcro though, might be worth a look at the new design. It weirded me out last time i tried it though.

i had the older one too and didn't like it. the new one worked for me, i could spin it out of the way if i didn't want to use it. took a bit of getting used to but i've used it on every bike i've owned and have never had the wrist fatigue i used to get.
