Best place to pick up a wiring harness?
« on: February 28, 2006, 04:53:52 PM »
I need a harness on my K1. Who should I go through? I've seen them on the Mrcycle.com microfiche for about $130. Is there anywhere to get them for less?

Someone, somewhere on here recommended a place outside of Toronto for replacement harnesses, used but good I think.  Can anyone from the Great White North help out here?  And crotchrocket.com has them for about the same $132.38, so you're in the right ballpark for a new one.

there's a couple places in southern ontario that likely have a number of SOHC harnesses about.

zdeno in kitchener is a large bike wrecker and they have well sorted inventory - guaranteed they have many SOHC harnesses. there's a couple others around, but i don't have a whole lot of experience with them.

I might have mentioned Zdeno's in Kitchener in another posting.  I love the place, but you have to go there and dig out what you're looking for (as a rule).  I would have no problem taking my multimeter there and spending half a day going through harnesses to find a good one.  Too bad they're not internet savvy (yet) though - you've pretty much got to go there yourself.  Even on student standby, I don't expect that would be an economical way for you to find a harness.  :)

I bought an excellent 400F harness off of ebay.  Although there were quite a few for sale, I wrote lots of email questions to the sellers.  After about half a dozen inquiries I finally found one from a 400F which had been rendered useless at 1700 miles - then stored for 30 years.  I gave ten dollars for it and the little plastic connection shrouds were still clear.  There was no metal corrosion or rubber errosion - the little Honda parts number was still attached.  The only thing wrong with it was a couple of the larger, plastic multi-pin connectors were crumbling (or about to crumble).  I swapped them out from my old one and it was fine.

By the time I figured in the amount of time I spent looking for it, writing emails, and fixing it up a bit, I suppose it cost me about $300. to $400.

I contacted Partsnmore and they said that they dont have the harness for a 71. I ordered PN# 32100-300-050 from MR Cycles for about $150 with shipping. I figure that's cheap compared to building one my self.

Yeah, you know, at the end of the day a yard and a half spent on a harness is most likely money well spent.  It takes time and effort to find a good deal on a decent used harness, and even if you find one - well, a harness is funny because even an excellent used harness can have one small flaw, and if that bit fails - yeeesh!  The time you spend finding that one small failed bit can be huge.

I think it's a good thing, what you did - sucking it up and getting quality new stuff.  It'll pay off - you just won't know it when it does probably.

Cheers,
