1977 - 1978 CB550 Super Sport F vs. K
« on: September 17, 2010, 04:57:04 PM »
I've decided to look for a 1977  or 1978 CB550, to keep as close to stock as possible and noted that there seems to be a  "K" and Super Sport F model.   I wondered if there was a list of the differences somewhere.  Is one version significantly better that the other from a parts availability, performance or features aspect?

I also noted that a lot of the K models which seemed to have 4 individual exhaust pipes are now fitted with an aftermarket 4 into 1 version.  Any issues with this?  (Do the Carbs have to be re-jetted and can you still access everything for maintenance.

Finally, one of the bikes I'm looking at wasn't used for about 20 years and I think has a head gasket leak.  Does the engine have to be pulled out for this?  How tough is it for a novice to replace?

Thanks,

Welcome to the forum Tree.  ;)
I have a '76F. From what I've read here, the K's you might be looking at have what are called PD carbs, & they appear to give a bit of grief to fellas who aren't real good at synching carbs. That doesn't mean that they don't work well, but they don't sound like fun to me.
After 20 years sitting, it's certain that you'll have to pull them down to tidy 'em up.
Yes, the head can be removed with the engine insitu. Manual is available at the top of this forum for d'loading.
I think all the Super Sports came with 4 into 1, but as in my case they've been changed from factory by now. The only change I made to mine was to slip the rear axle in from the L/H side so I don't have to remove the muffler to remove the rear wheel.
Good luck with your project.

You might be able to gain some insight by downloading the 500/550 manual here.  There is a 550F addendum sheet at the very end of it...

I also have the "F" model, I love the 4 into 1 header that came stock on it. The Honda exhausts were prone to rust, and are slowly going away.

They are both great bikes, the motor is the same, and the performance is similar [carbs + exhaust are differant as stated above].

Tanks and seats are slightly differant too. I'd say look for either and buy the best example you can find. Parts availability is good for both models.

A lot of these bikes have a slight oil leak near the head, it is not a major concern.
