tuff looking bike...
Which one ?
I think the Black & Silver has a much tougher/Exile Cycles look to it.

ProTeal, I agree, the seat mounted on the frame looks much better. Overall I like the silver & black
bike. There are a few changes that I would make for my own personal taste. I'd like to see wheels with
chrome spokes and aluminum rims (w/the brushed look or at least that's what I would call it when the aluminum is dull and not polished), I'm not too fond of wrapped pipes and I'd like the old style "British" taillight. Now then, those are my own personal thoughts and I'm not knocking the owner's taste or anybody else's. Myself, I'm still not sure what direction I want to go with my 77' CB550 "Project" but, that's another story and I'm not even sure what "Style" I'll go for. Keep up the good work there ProTeal and I'll catch you later on,  Bill :) ;)

I am still not 100% sold on the solo seat idea/concept on these bikes.
Yes I did buy one for my project, but that doesn't mean I will end up going with it.

I do plan to directly mount it to the panel I need to make to cover the battey. I am not a
fanof spring mounted seats on softail bikes. We will see what I come up with once I start
actually working on my bike.

It begins this weekend  ;D

Subscription ? No
But, I got to know Russel pretty well from the last shop I worked at.
We dealt allot with his parts, frames, rollers, etc, and he came out to the shop 3-4 times a season for shows and such. That guy can put em down like he is drinking water !

big fan of exile.  nice clean lines could go on but I thought I would drop a few more builders sites. check out <www.salinasboys.com>  mainly car builders but they have 3 bikes that you might want to get ideas from.  I am not a big fan of no front brake but they have a couple without em.
on the other end of the spectrum is <www.zero-eng.com> I like his radical disigns and use of different motors.  kimura is more of a zen feel type of builder.

That bike has a similar solo seat setup to the silver & black bike in my gallery.
For some reason, the seat looks better on the silver bike , than the Ebay bike above.
Not sure why, but it does (my opinion)

Maybe because the seat is mounted on the frame, rather than over it ???

Maybe the seat looks better on the frame because the black and silver bike is a cb450 parallel twin and not a cb750 inline 4. The 450 frame is much narrower which means it does not dwarf the seat like the cb750 frame tends to. Also that little kickup in the back frame rail helps to break up the straight across look. When you look at the proportions on the black and silver bike everything looks the right size, where as a cb750 motor and frame tend to make tanks and seats look small.
Maintenance Matters Most

Whether the seat is sprung or mounted on the frame is the main point. I believe that a
solo seat can be bought, that would look proper on a 750. That is what ProTeal and I was talking
about. I admit that I didn't catch the fact that the black and silver bike wasn't a 750 but, I
wasn't paying that much attention, when commenting about the seat. So thanks anyway but,
I still think the seat, mounted on the frame, looks better. Later on, Bill

As a matter of fact, that black & white bike isn't even a Honda, if you'll check it. It's actually a
YAMAHA XS650!  Well, I guess sometimes we just don't look close enough. I wander if anyone else
realized that. I still like the frame mounted seat though. Now, on a hardtail, sure a spring mounted
seat would be more in place. Later on, Bill ;)

Just a little more info on that black and white bike, That seat with the springs is a little bit of a necessity on that bike, as I spoke with the owner and those harley shocks on it are drained and welded, so its sort of a rigid, the springs break a little bit of the rough ride ;D, I do agree that the silver bike has a tougher look, sort of an exile look, but im really into getting the real old 30's and 40's look, where the spring seat was needed, if that black and white one had some nice low, wide beach bars it would be perfect to me.........Then Again im a little off in the head ::)..........................Notch

  Hey notch,

I've got nothing against springs on a solo seat on some bikes and I hope you don't think I'm passing judgement on anyone that does. Without knowing the details of that other bike, you'd never guess about the shocks on it. To each his own. I don't want to sound like everything has to pass my judgement or anything like that. Well. guess I've said enough, I better go before I start repeating myself. Later on, Bill :) ;)

- Sprung seats should be put on hardtails/Rigids , and thats it.
  (My opinion)
- If those shocks didn't do much of anything, he should of replaced them with some
nice pieces of round stock or something similar.
  (my opinion)
As stated , these are my opinions / styles.

Here is another one I found , for your viewing purposes.
I think it is a Yamaha XS. Needs to be lowered in the front, but it is a good example
to get some ideas from...

yeah, I've been living on the bratstyle site for the past month trying to get various ideas. that shop is titties!!! too bad its halfway across the world. they seem to do mostly xs's over there, which are narrower than our bikes so it throws things off a little
I'm dropping off my seat pan on tuesday to a guy to make one of those tiny pleated seats that seem to be on almost all of their bikes. hopefully it'll come out looking good!

Hey ProTeal, If you don't mind a little help, I'd like to let you know that the black one is a Yamaha SR500 and besides this style, some like to build a BSA "style" Gold Star. I guarantee you a "Real" Gold Star will set a person back around $10,000 or so. I agree, this one has some good ideas and typically there are some changes I'd make but, it's pretty sharp though. Let me know how your seat turns out. If you get close to those Brat style seats, I might send my stock seatpan to your guy
for my scoot. Keep me posted on that....

yeah, he's sent me some pictures of a few different seats he's done and they're close, so I'm pretty sure he can do it. I want to use the original pan though, so it's probably not going to be exact, due to our bikes being wider than most of the other brat bikes...yada yada yada. it'll be done in 2 or three weeks and I'll post a pic on here.

I dont know if you solved the sprung or unsprung seat thing?  I just know that in the midwest where the roads are mostly pot holes that I would like some spring in my seat.  this is especially true on a hardtail.  any distance riding will jar my kidneys loose.  been there done that.  Outside of the practicallity issue then you are looking at your specific style.  I can not wait to see how your build ends up.  send pics!

I agree with you 100% about having a sprung seat on a hardtail bike. The roads around here (Chicago) are deadly enough on a softail bike , let alone a hardtail. I had a hardtail for awhile , wasn't all too fun...

We will see how my build goes. I might run a stock seat on the bike for now, untill I really make up my mind on what I want to do...

I know these aren't Honda's, but I thought I would post them anyways for inspiration.
Someone by the name of ChopDoc built these. He is a big Yamaha guy, who seems to know
how to make these old jap bikes look good. The bike in the 2nd & 3rd pic is for sale on the "Bay"
