My First Rebuild (Updated 9-15-10)
« on: May 10, 2010, 12:55:44 PM »
Hello all!!  This is my first project, and I thought that I would post it here in the project shop so I could get feedback and advice as I go through my build.

I was given a 78 cb750f by my wife's uncle.  The bike had been sitting for about 3 years, and not really taken care of before that very much.

After getting the title transferred I got right to work.  I have taken apart the carbs.  I cleaned them (picture of them clean below), and placed new gaskets in them.

I have taken off the tank (which needs to be cleaned and sealed) and plan on cleaning it up with a Por-15 tank kit (pictures of that will follow).

I cleaned and painted a few odds and ends (battery box) just to keep myself busy.

My next plan is to change the plugs, oil, and oil filter and try and start it.

It is still far from finished, but I am loving the process.

Future plans for the bike call for:
-new bars (not sure about either adjustable clubmans or drag bars)
-Por-15 frame paint (chasis black)
-new tires
-possibly adding a new seat (I am not too fond of the stock one)
-I would love to add a set of Carpy's 4 into 1 pipes

That's pretty much where I'm at.  Any help, or advice on parts/brands would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Robert

I just decided to paint the engine with por-15 engine enamel.

Does anyone know what temp it withstands?

So since my last post some good things have happened and some not so good...

I have since used the por-15 tank kit to clean and reseal my tank.  That kit is excellent!!  My tank was horrible and it came out looking great.

I also used the por-15 chassis cote black to paint my frame.  I loved this one as well.  The pictures should be able to show how nicely it went on.  I used two cotes (spelling??) and it went on really well.

The bad news is that I wasn't able to start it.  I added oil and changed the plugs, only to find that the lights would not work and the ignition was broken.  I got a new ignition, and all the lights come on except for the headlight.  I am currently in the process of checking the started and the solenoid.  We'll see how that goes....

But anyway, here are some pics of the frame after the por-15 paint.

So it has been a little while since I last posted and there have been some interesting updates.

I finally got the engine to start only to hear a horrible noise coming from the cam area.  The noise goes away once the bike goes up in RPM's, but comes back while idling.  Not sure about that one..... I heard that it might be a carb sync issue.

Buying tires for it this weekend.  I decided to go Bridgestone Spitfires because they have great reviews and fit my budget.

If anyone has anymore ideas about the idle noise please let me know...

Pictures to follow.

Thanks!!

Possibly the cam chain slapping around? Check the tensioner. Also, you might want to adjust your valve tappets. Good luck!

I am thinking that it is the cam chain, but the tensioner seems to be fine.

Can you post some video? That may help diagnose the problem.
