CB550 Brake Pads, Technique

I was wondering, How do you guys handle your asbestos brakes. I'm going so far as to assume these drum brakes have asbestos pads. I'm not thrilled with jimmying them around but I'm in process of changing out the wheel bearings.

Is it better to wet them to keep them from dusting too much?

Do you guys clean the business end of the drum, the opposite side where the pads rub?

Its dirty in that hub and I want to clean it up a bit but make sure I do it right. Also the Axle has a lot of black grease, this I'm assuming is a good thing, do I refresh it? clean it off and add new?

Little bit of asbestos never hurt noone!
Plus, do you really think those are the original shoes?

Actually I don't know, the bike does have 13k miles. But last used in late 80's. Previous owner may have changed it as he was updated in in the early 00's.

Who knows? lol
When did they start bringing in the Kevlar or other compound brake pads?

Just don't blow the parts off with compressed air, as was the practice for decades. The danger is from inhaling the air-borne dust into your lungs.

Helmets save brains. Always wear one and ride like everyone is trying to kill you....
