Carb sliders are stuck, throttle cable won't pull them
« on: September 18, 2010, 01:48:11 PM »
I removed the carb rack from my '72 CB750 K2 2 weeks ago to clean the carbs. I only removed the float bowl and tried cleaning them from there (didn't want to take the top part of the carbs apart, I've never worked on a bike before). Once the bowls and jets seemed clean enough I pt the carbs back on the bike and reconnected the throttle cables.

Problem is, when I twist the grip the cable doesn't pull the assembly that draws the sliders out of the carbs. If I loosen the butterfly-shaped plate (where the cables attach) from the shaft, it moves freely (so the cables are fine). Oddly, the sliders worked fine when I removed the carbs.

I let the carbs soak in Simple Green for 24 hours, could that have seized the sliders somehow? Or is it something else that I may have missed?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Please do not be offended but did you mix up the cables and you are trying to pull from the idle position with the accel cable?  If the cable is free, and the slides move up and down without the cable, this would be my first guess.

after soaking mine in simple green, one of the sliders became stuck. easy fix, boil up some water, add a little wd40 (don't know if it helps but I love the smell. dunk the carbs in and after 30 seconds take them out and operate the throttle linkage. the slide should have freed up due to expansion of the carb body. good luck

No offense taken, the sliders don't move even by hand. The cables are set up correctly.

Thanks for the tip! I'm glad ( :D ) that someone else had this problem, at least I know it -can- happen!

I had that same problem with my 500.  I had to use to sets of carbs to make one good set.  They didn't get put on the bike until like 6 months after I rebuilt them.  When I got the bike all set and ready for its maiden ride, two blocks away from my house the throttle cable pulled out.  What I had to do was take carbs off and clean every single slide.  First it was a quick scrub down with a green scrubby pad and then boiled in simple green and water.

i soaked some carbs in simple green, did not rinse the insides out well enough and the sliders did stick. i'd bet that spraying wd-40 in there would free them right up like they did mine.

I had the same problem but it was the PO's tank liner melting.  It is easy enough to look in the tank.  a mirror on a stick will help look up top on the inside.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.
