71 honda exhaust question?
« on: September 19, 2010, 01:27:43 PM »
i bought a 71 honda and the guy took the mufflers off of it and it looks and sounds like crap so im looking for some new mufflers. so far i have found some pipes for a 74 cb750 and 78 cb750 and i was just wondering if they would fit? are the pipes pretty much universal on cb750's?

Yes, the pipes for the 74 750 would work. Are you talking OEM pipes or aftermarket? If OEM you would see a HM341 stamped on them for the 1974 CB750K. If you are looking for the original exhaust for that 1971 they are the HM300's and sound a lot better than the HM341's. You can buy the originals from Honda but they cost over $1,000 for the 4. Welcome to the boards...post a pic of your bike when you get a chance.

Yes, if that K1 is set up stock with OEM carbs, jets, and air box the OEM exhaust will help it run better. However, keep in mind that your K1 is set up for the HM300 exhaust not the HM341's.

well as far as i can tell is that the only modification is that it has aftermarket cone air filters

if your bike is running cones and and straight pipes, it probably has bigger main jets too.  unless the guy didn't increase the jets which might account the running like crap. either way you should check. you might even be able to peek without taking the carbs off the bike.

all it has is the headers and no he didnt change the jets on it and thats one reason why it runs like crap. its my first bike so i want it to run smooth but not spend a bunch of money on it till i get a little experience. no point in buying new pipes then scratching them all up

pipes from 69-76 K model 750's (excluding the F model, which had a 4 into 1 exhaust) will all physically bolt up. Assuming you're talking about Factory Honda pipes. As mentioned by other members in earlier posts, the differences are internal baffeling. 69-71 (300 series) k models were less restrictive than the later 341 series pipes that came on the 72-76 models. The engines on these models were all tuned accordingly. 77-78 k model pipes along with ANY year F model pipes will not fit a 71 k model physically.

I bought a 71 k1 & had to put new 300 from Honda. mufflers were 216. each ship for 4  mufflers was 195. not cheap. What I would do is buy  4 into 1. Price is a LOT cheaper. Bike will run a little faster & give better gas milage. I'm keeping mine all honda. Its in good shape with 17500 miles. Any problem PM me. azporkey
