clip ons, tripple tree question
« on: September 20, 2010, 07:14:02 PM »
So I was asking about adjustable clip ons for my 73' cb500F that fit above the tripple tree so they weren't so low, and was referred to the Tommaselli adjustables (thanks RR), and was wondering how room is made above the tripple for them to clip onto the fork. This is probably an obvious question, but was looking at my manual and searching on the forum and didn't come across anything that would explain how the procedure would work. Anyone elaborate on this? Maybe pics? Thanks!

I have not used the Tommaselli clip ons but similar models that have about the same type of profile. I would guess that the clamps aree probably not much longer than 1". The Tommaselli units look like they are designed to clip on underneath the trees but if you wanted to use them above the trees probably the simplest way would be to slide the fork tubes up one inch or so. You'd have to loosen the bolts that clamped the fork tubes tight and then just push/jiggle/pound with rubber mallet them up. You'd likely find this task much easier if you removed the front wheel and I can't see it affecting your ride at all. If you were concerned about your ride and didn't want the front end any lower than it already is, you'd need to invest in long fork tubes and swap them with what you already have.
This project started in confusion and will end in disarray.

Pushing your forks up thru your triples will change your steering geometry, "quickening" your steering. (less stable in a straight line, but it will turn in to a corner faster) Changing your headlight ears for aftermarket items will allow the fitment of clipons under the top triple tree.

Do a web search for "Laverda Jota adjustable handlebars", you won't find any originals, (they're like sandcast parts prices, mega dollar) but there are aftermarket copies that perform the same function for not a lot of money.

They were the best looking bar ever made, in my opinion, they are mounted where your OEM bars are, but can be adjusted up and down, out and in, to suit just about any riding style, and look super cool. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

I'm running the Tomaselli's on my 76 750f and am very happy w/ them. However, due to interference w/ the top crown they are not as adjustable as I wish(pinch bolts are in the way). I've done a bit of filing to the crown and now have a very comfy position. At some point I plan to purchase or have made a crown that mounts the bolts inboard plus my next tank will be beaten into submission to not hit the clip-on clamps, currently I have drilled holes in the fork stops and put bolts in to decrease the steering radius.
So much to do, so little time.

ahhh good to know. I was wondering about the tank clearance issues. Are you running these ones?

Did you order them off ebay?

Cheers!

Oops, I got confused. I have TAROZZI clip-ons - http://www.guzzino.com/tahicl.html
Got them from a place in Florida, I forget the name, also bought the Tarozzi folding rearsets, love em'. The ones you linked look like they are way more low profile.
So much to do, so little time.
