Battery Recomendations
« on: September 20, 2010, 09:13:35 PM »
Hi,

I'm in the process of doing up a 1975 CB550F from a wreck into a cafe racer, I want to order a seat and tank from Benjie's cafe racer and I'm wondering whats the best small battery to use? I'm not sure if i will go total loss ignition or not.
I've got no clue when it comes to batteries what i need, so I thought I'd ask you guys.
I'm planning to squeeze all the electronics under the seat cowl, and if need be i can make a little tray to fit under the seat pan.

So!, What sort of batteries are you guys using?

Is your bike only for racing? If so, for shorter races, loss-less would be fine. If it is not a racer, keep the charging system.
Get a small agm battery such as a 7 amp. A 7A will work fine if you use the starter sparingly or are mainly using the kicker.
Your biggest issue comes when idling for long periods of time. The 500/550 charging system does not seem to be the strongest. Maybe a switch to LED lights might be in order to allow more charge to be shoved into the battery.

Yuasa were the best I had. All three lasted 7 years, be it that the seventh year I had to kickstart it. I run a much cheaper now, Saito, but thanks to a good charger (I don't leave it connected) I can't say I am disappointed. When not riding I charge it every 4-6 weeks. Secret is not to let it drop below 12,5 V.
