How bad is the leak?
At each end of the block is an oil passage going to the cam, etc. They have o rings for a seal that harden with heat/time. They seldom do more than weep annoyingly, requiring a wipe off once a week or so.
I just ignore mine until it starts dripping on me. Then you must remove the head to access the o rings. If the cylinder base gasket gets disturbed (likely) then you have to take the cylinder block off too, to replace it, along with all the gaskets/seals from there up.
If you break a ring you have a ring job and boring/hone to do. If you install the cam cover(cylinder cover) improperly, you'll have bent valves to replace.
Yes, all the work can be performed with the engine in the frame.
