CB550 oil leak repair 101: oil pump cover, shifter shaft, etc
« on: September 21, 2010, 04:31:06 PM »
After almost 3 years of continuous lousy/minor oil leaks! I think I've fixing the final leak! I am one lazy bastard, but I think I have finally plugged up all my left side oil leaks! I can finally buy a new pair of shoes/boots and not watch them get ruined by motor oil!

101 ON HOW TO FIX YOUR OIL LEAK
(My suggestions only)

-Everyone assumes it's the oil pump cover O-ring, but don't replace it just yet!

You might just end up starting another leak!  Removing old motor parts breaks their seals and causes new leaks when you reassemble! Curiosity also causes oil leaks!

-You may have more than one leak and it may not be your oil pump cover O-ring!

1- Remove your shift lever and remove the chain cover. Then put shifter lever back on!
2- Get a pressure washer or ride to your local car wash. Degrease and pressure wash all the old oil and grime from your pump area, shifter shaft seal, main chain gear, and under and around your oil pan.
3-Warm up your motor with a short sprint or dry off with air compressor.
4-Get a bottle of baby powder and spray it all over/around your pump area, shifter shaft area, main chain gear area and near lower starter motor.
5- Go for a short ride with multiple stops. It may even take a 2nd/3rd ride. I personal left the cover off for a week and jumped on the freeway too!

-The powder sticks well to parts and will show where the oil starts to leak from. I suggest taking a few trips, to get a nice dark stain or oil spray marks. Some leaks are slow!

-prop bike on center stand and get a flash light! Start looking, repeat riding if your not sure about the leak, it may take a few rides!

-Other possible leak areas(I've had them all)
Oil pressure sensor goes bad/leaks on top.
Shifter shaft seal.
Drive(Chain)Sprocket seal.
Oil pan gasket leak.
Pump cover leak(the one everyone says to change)
Pump body leak(there are 3 O-rings under the pump body) and two dowels(easily fall out). Missing dowel=leaky O-ring.
Starter motor leak(thin O-ring). Thin oil stream, hard to see, unless you use baby powder! Annoying leak that makes you change everything first!

The one final leak was my shift shaft seal, that I thought I had replaced a year or so ago. I replaced the chain gear seal, but never the small shifter one! My bike has eaten dozens and dozens of shoes! Mostly Chuck Taylors!  I hope this helps!

Lazy L.A. Nomad!

PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT IF THIS HELPED. TOO MANY POSTS LACK A LIST OF PROBLEM AREAS.

I'm having the same issue. Just replaced the shifter seal thinking that was the problem however the leak is not only still there but getting worse.

I was going to give your method a go today but I was wondering if there are any concerns with the degreaser screwing with the finish on any of the engine covers. The only reason I ask is because I've seen plenty of people warning against the use of certain chems citing reactions with the aluminium.
