How much do you pay for annual insurance?
« on: September 22, 2010, 01:04:37 PM »
I'm completely new to bikes.....so I've never really followed insurance rates before. I got an estimate on my bike(s) prior to buying them, and thought it was pretty outrageous, but if that's what people pay, I was willing....until I realized the huge discrepancy in rates from Province to Province, let alone Canadian rates compared to American!

To get the ball rolling on this, I only have one bike insured right now..my '78 cb550K...annual insurance is just north of $1300 for me in the lovely Province of Manitoba.

I'm just curious to find out what some of you are paying so I can go bang my head against the wall...

1976 CB550- $76

1972 CB450- $68

Progressive. But, I'm actaully considering changing to agreed values for the Hondas which will push those numbers way up.

Wow...I realize that policies will differ....but a difference of well over $1000 is nuts.

Only one carrier up here too as insurance is public. So I have no other options  ;D

There is your problem.    I pay 100 for 2 bikes but at bare min coverage.  I pay more for the fn plates now.

I pay about $120 a year for straight liability, no damage, medical payments, etc. I may shop this around. I am not sure what the Canadian policy covers. You may be getting more for your money.

Believe it or not, that seems about right to me...... I also believe were getting screwed up here  >:(

I started off paying $1,100/year in Ontario for my 350F, and now it's down to $750 three years after. Send a PM to Winnipeg550guy if he's still on here and see where he's at on insurance.

I can't believe you guys are insured for $100 bucks a year  :'(

I think im at 220 from progressive with 2 bikes. I will try to lower it when it comes due. I have 2 cars full coverage and one liability for $480 /6 months from 21st century! It was a few hundy less than Geico with an NRA discount! So Join the NRA and save. Its only 35 a year ;D

What do your policies cover in Canada?  Just the other person or you also?  What about a stolen bike or you dumping it over?

What do your policies cover in Canada?  Just the other person or you also?  What about a stolen bike or you dumping it over?

I don't know what other jurisdictions require, but policies here in Ontario must be a minimum of $200,000 Liability coverage.  Most underwriters start coverage at $500K and $1M is getting more common.  Liability covers damages to other people's property that your vehicle might cause, plus personal injury and recovery for yourself (or operator) plus passenger.  That's presumably why we pay so much for much for motorcycle coverage here in Canada - even with "medicare", the extra costs for injury recovery from motorcycle accidents can be very high...medicare/OHIP doesn't cover this and with "no-fault" policies, neither does the other party's insurance, even if they are at fault in causing the accident.  If you are caught without insurance, then there is a hefty fine of around $10,000!

Along the line of "no-fault", if you don't have the optional coverage for Liability (an extra charge that provides payment for your vehicles repair or write-off from an accident), then you are on your own if your vehicle is damaged - regardless of who is at fault.  Without Liability coverage, if the other party causes the accident creating the damage then you would have to personally sue them for damages.

Collision only covers damages caused by an accident, so there is still another part to vehicle insurance that is optional and another extra charge.  That  is for Other Perils that would typically include Fire and Theft.  There is also falling debris from airplanes, but more common would be vandalism and upset from what-ever (e.g. someone knocks-over or runs-over your parked bike in a parking lot).

Policies for motorcycles here in Ontario are always written for a full year, even if the riding season is not.  That means if you cancel the policy at the start of winter, they pro-rate the refund in recognition that the winter months of the year are not typically ridden and only give a pittance (if anything) back.  In other words, the refund isn't a simple calculation of percentage of months/days remaining over the whole policy duration.

Ya get the drift that here in Canada (Ontario) that the insurance guys are out to ... ::)

At any rate, with a good driving record I pay about $800 Full Coverage for a 2003 Goldwing, $400 Full Coverage (special vintage policy) for a 1974 CB350F, and $140 Liability only ($500K) for a 1981 CB750-K that I picked-up in July but is only is covered for the 1/2 year through to January renewal (what a deal :'().  I can only ride one at a time, and the insurance would be the same cost for each even if I had only one to ride all the time. ::)  For comparison, I pay $166 for Full Coverage on a 1965 Austin Healey sports car, a convertible without seat belts and with a 3 litre straight six motor. 8)

In BC a 750 is around 80-100 per month.. with no fire & theft or collision!.. and that is with the 40% good driver discount.. :o  :o
Its no fault Provincial insurance.
One good thing we can get here .cheap.. is underinsured motorist protection.. covers against other drivers being underinsured. In 82 I had a accident in Sturgis..while WALKING.. got into a hit & run.. but it was an MVA and reported. I was covered under the underinsured clause, which I got a considerable lump out of.. Didnt fix my leg up completely but at least , I was covered.. Well worth adding that on..

jeez... $70 a year, and that was with out a "m" endorsement. wonder if it'll be cheaper now that i have my m1? On another note, my roommates mother is a broker for progressive, tried to go through her for full coverage on my truck, almost #$%* a golden egg when i got her quote... so i tried online for #$%*s and giggles and got a qoute for well over $1k less a year. we went back and forth trying to figure out why she got the numbers she did, no dice. progressive is just trying to phase out brokers (far as we can tell) so get your policy online and save some $$$$

Been thinking about changing.  I thought I was paying out the azz.  State farm seems a bit crazy when it comes to bikes.

I pay $67.67 a month ($812.04 a year) for momma's 750.  Full coverage though.  Dunno the numbers.

Heck, if I can get it as low as a lot of you, I could actually afford another bike in the stable.  The insurance is what has stopped that.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

£95 a year covers me for the f2 750, kawasaki avenger and an old bonnie . that includes british and european breakdown cover and legal protection . the reason its so cheap is that over here we have dedicated classic policies [ bikes over 15 years old ] there are no milage restrictions . you have to be over 25 to be eligible

Unreal.

Here in Vancouver, where we have one government operated insurance provider, I pay $350 to insure my '76 750F for 3 MONTHS!

I just put some tags on a pickup for $1600/yr, and my convertible is a good $400 for 3 months. You guys have it good.
