Molasses is acidic, which means it eats good metal along with the rust.  Electrolysis only removes the rust from good metal.

I did an experimant with a sodium hydroxide product for cleaning a/c coils. Works great on a surface rust and removed paint. Bit sketchy though. It is supposed to be biodegradible, but very corrosive?
