What bike is this tank for?
« on: April 27, 2005, 08:16:57 PM »
I bought a fuel tank on eBay that was advertised as being from a CB 550 F. In the picture, it looked comparable to the tank on my 550 K, but when it showed up, it didn't fit at all (it's too narrow to fit over my front rubbers, and the rear mounting piece is too long). Plus, it has a different petcock position and two fuel outlets toward the rear that just make no sense for my bike (see detailed photo at bottom).

The distance between the front mounts is about 3 1/2 inches. The distance between the front and rear mounts is about 20 1/2 inches.

Anybody recognize this type of tank? Since it's useless to me, I'd like to resell it on eBay, but before I list it, I want to make sure I know what model bike it's for.

those are not fuel outlets... they  bring fuel from the un-petcock side to the other via a tube between the two "outlets".  how else would the gas from the right side of the tank be able to get to the petcock otherwise?  anyway... it looks similar to my 350 tank but i dont think it is original.  let us know what you find out.

It might be for a 350 twin.

Looks like a CL350 (Twin) tank.

Interesting. That's 3 votes for a 350. But I'm not so sure. I've only seen 350's in photos, and the tanks seem rather small. This one is as big as the tank on my 550, it just doesn't seem to have the right mounting dimensions.

A CB/CL 450 perhaps?  I'd have to double check on the two crossover outlets.

Well, the thing is, the seller and I had a bit of a falling out (over the small point of him being a liar and an a-hole), so I haven't even bothered to ask.

Besides, he advertised it as being pulled off of a CB550F, which may infact be the truth. Even if the tank isn't correct, you could modify the bike so that it fits. I just don't want to modify my bike to make it fit.

At first I thought of a CB360 twin; I will check mine tomorrow when I'm in the workshop & take some pics. I can take a look at a 450 and a 500T as well when I'm around.

cheers, Remi

Well,

my money is on a later model CB450 DOHC twin. I'm attaching photos of the white 1973 360, green circa 1973 CB450 and a 1975 500T.

I have also checked a '68 CB450 DOHC with the oval instruments. This bike has a completely different tank (higher with chrome inlays).

ONLY the green 450 has those extra tubes at the back of the tank as seen on the photograph.

Hope this helps, Remi

And yes, I know there's still some work to do on those bikes. ;D

Remi, that's a big help. Thanks for doing that. I think you're probably right about the 450. Much appreciated. Off to eBay I go...

I would say maybe SL or Cl 350. There is a tab with the hole drilled in it that has been welded on the back mount though. The 360 tanks as I recall didn't have the crossover tube, and my gut says it's short for a 450. Some gut too!
