This stinks...
« on: September 23, 2010, 02:02:28 AM »
I bought my Ducati into one of the local shops t get the tires changed. Normally, I would just pull the tires myself and just bring in the wheels, but I was feeling lazy and just brought in the whole bike. I got a call at 5:30 last night and the guy told me that they "had something unfortunate happen" with my bike. When they had it up on the stand, it fell off.  :'( Mostly cosmetic damage, like a dented tank and something about the front fender.

He said that it is rideable, and they will pay for the damages. 10 years ago I had to replace the tank and it took over a year to get a new tank at it cost over $2000. I have no idea what it will cost now and how long it will take to get one in.

I'm just very sad.

That's no good mate, I hope the shop pays up. Is it insured? Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Dented tank
Scuffed up fender
Broken rearset bracket
Damaged exhaust (right side)
Damaged Givi trunk rack (fortunately I left the trunk at home when I dropped the bike off)

The shop says they will fix it. The tank is discontinued (familiar story on this site) but they have a body man they work with that says he can fix it.

They also said that they will not charge me for the mount and  balance of the new tires (good thing...).

Mick

Fcuken oath Mick, the last thing I'd want is a new(ish) bike with a tank full of bog, (bondo) Particularly, a Ducati.I was over at my favorite bike wrecker/repairers last weekend, Jeff had a Kawasaki ZX9 that had a minor crash to repair, the painted frame's top rail was scratched so he'd sent it over to be touched up, when the painter hit it with the sander, a big chunk of bog flew out, revealing a massive bodged repair on the frame rail, that made that frame a write off! Jeff (the wrecker) had to source a complete frame, and the repair cost escalated from just over 1500 bucks, to 3800!

I'm guessing that KB doesn't have insurance, because if it was me, I'd have it assessed and repaired by an independant repairer, (preferably a Ducati dealer who won't bodge the repairs) and have the insurance company chase the money up from the shop that damaged his bike.  Cheers, Terry. ;D

I'd bring it to the local Duc dealer for proper repair.
There has to be a NOS tank hiding somewhere?

The shop IS working with the local Duc shop to get all the parts they can (accept for the trunk rack as they are authorized Givi dealers themselves). BUT, the closest Duc shop has only been a Duc shop for less then a year. As far as the insurance goes, the bike is fully covered, but I don't see a reason to risk raising my rates or paying ANY KIND of deductable if the people who damaged it are willing to pay for it right out of the gate. If they said, "Oops. Sorry. here's your bike back," Insurance AND lawyers would now be involved.

The bike is ten years old, so a repaired tank is fine with me as long as it's not just a clump of bondo filling in the dent and it at least "looks" like new. The worst part of it is that I will loose some pin striping lettering that I had put on. I'm not sure sure how I feel about that as I had been thinking of taking it off anyway. We'll see...

I'd bring it to the local Duc dealer for proper repair.

It's the Duc shop that said they couldn't find the tank.

Thanks.

I got a call about a week ago with a status update. Parts are coming in and the tank is out being fixed. I hope they hurry up. The season is coming to a close and I've got some foliage rides to go on.  :-\

Loaner Bike? It is the least they can do since they have your bike tied up for an extended time with repairs. I would think they can give you something interesting for a weekend fall color ride. Bonus is you get to try a different bike for a few days.

A little late to jump in the fray now, but I agree with the others that say, "I don't care if it's discontinued.  You will find me a NOS tank and you will put it back the way you found it."

Love the loaner idea, too.

i had a Ducati Monster that suffered the normal tank ding from a drop (you know the place).  That metal is thick and strong.  I had mine pulled out and fixed inexpensively.  I am sure they can make that tank like new.  Hell, the paint is 10 years old.  You are getting a face lift.  Pick a color, maybe it's time for a new look.  :)  Get them to paint the fender and tail piece (even if it wasn't on the bike).

You originally had a unmarked, undamaged tank, thats what you should get back, no compromise. I would have contacted Ducati from the start and organised a new tank, there is no way in this world would i accept a tank with bondo in it if it was unmarked originally....

And i think you missed the part where he said that he couldn't "FIND" one in the States, there is no reason why he couldn't contact Ducati and get an unmolested tank. It is simply bull#$%* that they don't make a replacement tank for a modern Ducati {10 year old}.

I dropped the bike ten years ago after I first got it. It took the Ducat dealer over a year to get a new tank from Ducati. This was for a BRAND NEW BIKE at the time. It was not until the spring of 2001 that I was able to get a replacement tank from my accident in the spring of 2000. It doesn't surprise me in the least that they no longer make the tank and with the cost of the thing (Lists for $1500 now and $2000 back in 2001) it doesn't surprise me that no one just happens to have one lying around NOS. I would rather have MY TANK, repaired correctly, than someone else's possible problem that they picked up on ebay.

I agree. It's total Bull Sh!t that it happened. And I will NOT be bringing that bike back there for any work in the future, that's for sure. And If I were to buy a new bike from one of the manufacturers they represent I will most likely go to a different dealer to do the deal and would certainly look elsewhere for service. BUT - they are owning up to their problem. They are taking care of it. I am okay with that. As long as I get my bike back, it looks great and rides great just like it did before. I will be happy.

+1. I don't even like using bondo in 40 year old tanks, and I'd feel guilty if I didn't tell the new owner that there was bondo in the tank. This company in Holland has 2 new Ducati Monster tanks for sale for 630 bucks each, which is a lot better than 1500 or 2000. I did an EBay search for "Ducati Monster tank" and there were plenty of hits. Cheers, Terry. ;D

That one is fuel injected. Mine i carbureted. It's a different tank.

My model tank was only made for, like, two years. and I certainly don't want something that "is close enough." I want the right tank.

You will see tons of tanks on ebay, he is right though, the FI tanks do not fit.  The problem with used tanks is that if the bike has EVER been down, even a light drop will ding the upper corner of the tank.  I am willing to bet that 99% of the used tanks for sale have been dinged in the upper corner where the handlebar flexes and tags it.

Yeah, no doubt you're right mate, I was just trying to point out that there are still plenty of tanks out there and not to just accept a repaired tank. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)
