Can someone make a battery recommendation ??
« on: September 23, 2010, 04:18:34 PM »
I have a CB650SC 82'... right now I have an Advance Auto (generic) battery in the bike. Seems to work OK but it has a hard time getting the engine to crank when the bike is hot. Works great cold. Charging fine, clean terminals, starter has been checked out and is fine. Replaced solenoid 6 months ago. Once the engine turns over the bike starts right up.

Seems to me that the battery does not have enough cranking amps... is that correct... are the battery's from the Honda dealer any better??

Thanks for the help!!!!

Go to a battery plus store, or interstate and get an AGM absorbed glass matt. It's a sealed battery.
I bought the "X2" it's made in America, and come with a 3 year warranty.

It's highly underrated for CCA. I paid 99 bucks for one for my sportster. It starts instantly now where before it would crank for 3 or 4 seconds

My dad just pulled one out of his electra glide....it's been in there for 10 years.

Don't buy a battery at the dealer! [unless you just like to buy overpriced items].

A slow cranking hot motor sometimes leads to a bad starter.

I'd get the battery checked; or replaced if over 3 yrs old.

meriggi, I had the starter checked at a local starter place, they said it was fine. The starter is a used one off ebay, but the starter I pulled out did the same thing. I checked into getting the starter rebuilt and was told parts are no longer available????  ???javascript:void(0);

Battery is only about 1 year old

Check your wiring and connections, make sure you are getting a good ground.

Chasing electrical gremlins is not fun, go through it all.

Good Luck.

Are you sure your motor is not running hot?

If you do need a battery after checking thing else out,, go here for one

http://www.batterystuff.com/batterySearch.php?theType=Motorcycle&theMake=Honda&theModel=750cc+CB750K+Four&theYear=1973&m=1#result

I bought one a month ago and it is a great battery with a slow self discharge. I've let my bike sit for at least 5 day without plugging it into the trickle charger and she fires up every time.  By the way, another forum member told me about this battery, so my indorsement of it is not be compensated.

Bluez

Looks like a good battery. I am a bit surprised it has only a one-year warranty, although I'm not familiar with what is typical for bike batterys.

I'm likely headed for a new battery before long. I think the AGM is the way to go. I'm gonna look around locally first - mostly for possible "service" needs after the purchase.

OP... your battery has no idea when your bike is hot or cold, so I would think your problem in in the starter circuit...remember, when the bike is 'hot' and ridden for some time , the battery should be at the peak of it's charge!, some very looong posts here on that subject relating to 650 80-82's. If you go for a ride and the next morning the bike starts fine with the battery spinning the starter good, then the probs. not the battery IMO.

If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,

You need to check both your starter's condtion and your ignition timing, because one of them is off.  Dieing starters and ignition timing that is too far advanced (or with badly pitted points) will both make a hot engine hard to start.

Just replace my CB650PZ's battery after my 1 year old battery died, my fault as I was trickle charging it and I killed that battery and my partner's GSX400 battery, expensive lesson.
BESCO make a perfect battery for our 650's and it's available all over the world from what I can see.

So can old crusted cables.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

Ah found it, here you go Goatman:

Sorry that is a New Zealand site but the battery you require is a CTX14AHL-BS, sealed so they don't leak and no drippy overflow to leak acid all over your paint and tires. :)
