WTF-->CB400F wiring diagrams = wrong?
« on: September 24, 2010, 12:03:10 am »
I have thought a lot before saying this, but I'm pretty sure that every wiring diagram I have seen for the 400f is wrong.

The one that someone was kind enough to upload to the forum is the same as the Clymer manual, which is the same as the Old Man Honda animated gif thinger--they're all for the "350-400F," which is funny, because those bikes have one very different variable: the stupid headlight cutoff system that (in US bikes, at least) switched off the headlight when you pushed the power button.

That's a major circuit, and it's majorly different.

Anyway, I bring this up because I'm wondering if anyone has a correct wiring diagram. In attempting to convert my right-hand controls to the ones from a '76 750 (rider-controlled headlight power FTW), I realized that, basically, the whole bike needs to be rewired. PO was your standard-issue moron who thought that his basket-weaving class would give him the knowledge to play a little jazz in the wiring harness.

So yeah, I've got Saturday free, and this needs to get done. Anyone have a wiring diagram for the US model 400F from 1975? Or an anyone neatly sum up the differences between the 350 and the my bike? Or can someone tell me why I'm an idiot?

Thanks.

HI, I have a wiring diagram from the Haynes manual labeled  CB400f (US model). It shows the correct switching for the starter button. I tried to attach the jpg of this diagram to this post but it was refused as too big a file.  I will try to send it to you attached to a direct eMail if you let me have your eMail address.
Alternatively, can anyone tell me how to attach the jpg file which is about 2 megs long.  best wishes, John.

The ONLY accurate wiring diagram is in the Honda service manual and the Honda owners booklet. The booklet one is very small and hard to read. The service manual one is nice but I have never found a decent scan online, the pdfs are so blurry it's impossible to read the wire colors in particular.
My scanner failed so I can't help you, sorry. If you're desperate I could xerox it and send you a copy.

I have one from the Honda owners booklet.
It was small so I used a photcopier to blow it up... very effective.

The one listed on oldman is the same wrong one I tried to use on my CB400F.
It doesn't show a fuse block or three wires in the starter switch for starters... (pun intended..lol)

Its not a year thing but a US as against everywhere else thing cos some idiot decided you all needed the headlamp on all the time.

The RH switches have a MAJOUR difference depending on type

The UK one, where you can turn the lights on and off at your discression grounds the starter solenoid via the bars (Yellow/red wire) so the solenoid has a permanent live small wire.

The US one, where the lights are on as soon as the switch is on, POWERS the solenoid via a green/red wire (from aged memory) whilst turning the lights off to lessen current draw. This means the US switch has 3 wires to it(UK only 1) and the solenoid has a permanent ground small wire.

Clear as mud now?

Hi John, the best way to display large pictures is to upload to a 3rd party site like Photobucket then post the link in your message.
