Saw him in '68. I was 3 years old and rockin' my cloth diapers. (No fancy plastic Pampers with elastic leg openings back then.  ;)) So we're sitting in a bar trying to come up with a name for the band, and John say's, "Hey, let's call it _______.  To which I replied, "Yeah, that'll go over like a Lead Zepplin! (Yes, they dropped the 'a' in lead) And the rest, as they say is history...  ;D ;D ;D

What a loss, he was one of the best drummers I've ever heard who didn't just bang the crap out of his kit, perfect timing and nuance, something missing from most of the drummers you hear these days. Unfortunately, I never got to see them live. my loss!

Led Zeppelin's first album was released to the public in 1969.  Honda released the SOHC 750 in 1969.  Led Zeppelin's last album was produced in 1978.  The last 750 SOHC was also produced in 1978.  They are closer than you think, I guess.

Bonzo was truly amazing.  I sent a check in to see them in Chicago.  The subsequent week after I sent the check, John Bonham unfortunately passed.  I got my check back :(.

WARNING... POTENTIAL BUZZ KILL MOMENT....

Go to YouTube and look up "Zeppelin plagiarism".  There are three videos (part 1, 2 and 3) that (if true) seem to point out that the lads from Zeppelin didn't have very much original material (except Bonzo :)).  Gotta hand it to the black blues performers.  Those guys were incredible.

I am sorry but its not plagerized music

led  the stones the doors hell most of the music from that day     those bands loved the blues  and wanted to play it  and the bands   all made sure the original musicians gave their blessings    the stones played with muddy waters  the doors   played with howlin wolf    eric clapton  with cream  sat down with  BB king on many many occasions and played back then music was the experience  and the moment     well before they took hit songs and sold you something like phone service

i wish i could tell these tells from experience     i only have liner notes and books  but      man   its fun to read and think back

[sic]

I don't want to turn this into a "pee-ing" contest and I love Led Zeppelin (did you watch the youtube videos?).  A large number of their songs are lifted note for note (lead parts) and word for word (lyrics) from music that comes from as far back as the 20's.  If that's not plagiarism, I don't know what is.  Also, credit was never given on the early album releases to anyone other than the Jones, Bonham, Page and Plant.  If you watch the video, it's claimed there were out of court settlements and recognition in the credits on later releases of the same albums.

The rock and roll industry is rife with "borrowing" sounds, riffs, lyrics, etc. (ask George H about "My Sweet Lord/She's So Fine"), but directly lifting is more rare (but prevalent in Zep's work).  Heck, artists like John Lennon would invite powerful young upstart musicians to play at his home (with recorders running) to "develop" new ideas.  The young guys were just happy to be there and share the "stuff" to impress industry greats.  This is for a guy that already had a ton of creative juices flowing (Lennon).

On the other hand, Zeppelin did an incredible job of arranging their music and developed a "sound" that was matched by none at the time.  Bonham was possibly the most "original" of the group.  Plant had (and to a degree still has) an incredible "signature" voice.  But.... it cannot be argued that their music and lyrics were original.  Most of it was lifted.

sorry about leaving the contest at rest so long

the fact is that  we are contending with something that has been placed or uploaded to the internet and while i have seen the videos and it is chilling i have read many books on led and the doors and the stones and in those books they have thanked and
praised the blues musicians

now excuse me but i must play this card and very trumpetingly

I AM sir shocked and appalled but as hard to believe as it may be    you must not believe everything you see on the TV internet and news papers      if so  sir  i would love to sell you some property and pills and i have a propistion of some money i left in africa and need your bank numbers to use as a vessel to get it out of the country   ]

Wait...  so, your rebuttal in this debate between you and Gamma is  "don't believe everything you see on the Internet"?  I mean, all you've really said is "no they didn't"  and  "it's not lifting/copying/plagiarism if they said thank you in books years later"

Hmmm.....  not very robust...

well okay then it wasn't years later   it was during  the rock phenom  and really sir i have no more arguements  due to the fact that  my point was rather between the lines that if you want   to understand it all then please  do not just read into one side

negative news gets more attention than good   and the fact and the song remains the same

Led was the first band to put the drums up-front in their recordings, mixed louder than every thing else, driven by a 24 inch. kick drum, the sound was/is unique and ( thankfully ) not attempted since. We owned it in the '70's and it's still fresh today.

Side note, Robert Plant picked-up my daughters class-mate Sam at school last week.
