backfire from carbs and out exaust.
« on: September 25, 2010, 05:33:57 PM »
OK so now I'm trying to start my girlfriends bike.  i took the motor out  to part it and the frame.  also a carb rebuild.  put it back together. didn't touch the timing as it was perfect.
all i have gotten so far is a few puffsout the carbs. and a few loud pops out the muffler.
i did a bench sync, which was part of the cleaning and examining of the carbs. than a quick paint job on the bodies.

could have the timing adjusted itself. the cover was on the motor thewhole time except when i put the custom points cover on.  it has plenty of clearance.

fuel is brand new got it weds night. carbs do have fuel. and i have spark. battery is holding 11.4 volts when i checked it this morning. which still lets my LED tail light work.

 driving me nuts.
just need a clear head or 100 to give me i deas and some moral support

ohh yeah its a 76 550 super sport.  stock 4-1 exaust and  pods. with a diffrent muffler.

Sounds like you may have either the coils or spark plugs wired up backwards.

hmmmmmm
i bet.. OK i had a bad set of coils too when i put it back together or someone barrowed my good set..
so if you know off the top of your head. the yellow lead to the coil goes to the left or right coil.
i know a fresh head would help. i bet its exactly whats going on.

i just checked and it looks like your correct. gonna give her a try right now

A fully charged battery is 12.6V
A depleted battery is 12.2 v no load.

LEDs take about .1 amps.  Coils take about 3 amps.

Charge your battery

The odd misfires do sound like timing issues/miswire.

I learned the hard way (multiple times, unfortunately ;)) that it's usually the obvious things that trip you up the most.
