1973 cb750, despite lubing cable, speedo needle jumping
« on: September 26, 2010, 01:37:16 PM »
So I have removed the speedo cable on my '73 cb750 at the speedo itself and at the bottom of the cable where it attaches to the speedo drive on the front wheel.

I can plainly see that when I drop some household 3-in-1 oil (1st attempt) or 'Amazing Blaster' penetrating lubricant (2nd attempt to lube the cable) at the top of the cable where it attaches to the speedo -- the lubricant sure enough comes out the bottom of the cable.

I sprayed lubricant into the opening of the speedo drive where the cable plugs into.

The speedo needle jumps like a madman, no change.

Do I need to pull the front wheel and remove/clean/re-grease the speedo drive?

Or could this 'jumping speedo needle' be in the speedo itself?  Bike has 50k miles, great and strong runner.

Lubing doesn't always cure it.  Probably time for a new cable.  And don't go spraying anything up inside the speedo.  It can get gummed up and then either need to be opened up and cleaned out or replaced.
