I actually never bothered cleaning the threads as the nut spun on pretty freely, I don't have a die the right size so I'll probably just give the threads a clean with a wire brush. Looking at it now Larry it does look like there is some crud there maybe it came off the threads as I put on the nut. If not I'll take up the slack with washers like you say Gerry.

Think I might pick up a set of them disk bolts from Steve at 400four bits alright just to be on the safe side. I was just going putting in an order to him already this morning and never even thought of checking if he had them bolts.Thanks.

Steve and 400FourBits are great. CMSNL is always ludicrously expensive when compared to DSS I think. Even for the small bits, CMSNL is often twice as expensive. In my experience anyway.

I've never actually ordered stuff from CMSNL I just use them for looking up part numbers as you can find them on CMSNL pretty fast. I think their prices are pretty similar though but I usually just order from DSS as the postage to Ireland is pretty fast and I receive orders usually within 3 working days. The one thing that catches me with DSS is that when your looking at stuff the VAT isn't included in the price. I've added stuff to the basket a few times adding prices up in my head as I go along and then when I'm finished I go to checkout and my order is more than what I expected.

Just ordered a few bits from Steve at 400fourbits a few mins ago and ya he's very good to deal with.

cms are selling most orginale parts..most i get to my disc brake vas nos parts..often are there orginal expensive parts and cheep afterparts..but cms are an robot...dss are easyer to deal with..and talk vith

So time for another small update.

Got another few small bits painted in the last few days.

Got a Tach and a few other small bits from Steve at 400fourbits.

Took speedo and tach apart, gonna get new faces of some kind and try use an LED ring or strip inside instead of standard bulbs.

Ordered a Hondaman ignition, probably be waiting a while for that in the post.

Got caliper pivot freed up. When putting the pivot arm back together what should I pack it with, copper grease or ordinary grease?

Picked up another airbox on ebay with the boots intact and bike is running much better now, seems that cut someone put in the boot to try get it on actually made a difference to the running of the bike. Was having a b!tch of a time trying to get the airbox back on, the problem I had was I couldn't get the boots on fully to carbs 2 and 3 so decided to do it a slightly different way. I took all the boots off the airbox and pushed them onto the carbs fully and tightened the clamps. After this I then pushed the airbox in without the boot on the air filter side. I had also taken the metal tunnel thing out of the air filter housing for more room. I then used a flat screwdriver to push the cone side of the boots back into the airbox being very careful. Then I put the boot back on the airfilter side and slid the tunnel back into it from the air filter housing. It worked great it just took a lot of time and now all the boots are on fully.

Also tried to tension the cam chain and ran into a bit of a problem, I slackened the lock nut and the bolt with ther bike idleing as per the manual and it seems the cam chain loosened when I did this and is now making an awful racket. I'm guessing the spring isn't strong enough to do its job anymore and someone did the screwdriver down throught the bolt hole above the tensioner bolt to tension it and the spring loosened again when I loosened the tensioner bolt. I'll do the same thing to try tension it again but I might use a long bolt like I saw suggested somewhere else on the forum. Have to try find that thread again.

You might be able to get the airbox in the normal way with the boots in it first, I just did it this way cause I couldn't get the centre two boots onto the carbs. This took a lot longer but it worked out well. These airbox's are notorious for being a b!tch to get back on so hope it works out ok for you too.

Ok so I have been really lucky with this bike so far in as far as get it running, I got a new genuine points plate (inc. points and condensors) from DSS and just bolted it on and when i checked the timing today with a strobe timing light the 1,4 points were absolutely spot and the 3,4 were just svery slightly out, would have gotten away without even adjusting them. Also the advance mechanism seems to be 100% as well so happy with that.

When I was putting the carbs back together a few weeks ago after cleaning them I just bench synced them by eye, i.e. just looked into the throat of the carb and judged how far up the slides were by eye. Today I decided to try balance the carbs and lo and behold they are almost perfect (a complete fluke on my part I'd say) as well. They are pretty much spot on so I won't even bother trying to adjust them til the hondaman ignition comes before and then I'll try to really fine tune them.

I did encounter one small problem though while I was adjusting the tappets, the lock nut on the exhaust tappet adjuster for cylinder no. 1 seemed to be seized onto the tappet adjuster itself. I took the adjuster out and got the lock nut free but it was really tight on the threads of the adjuster, so tight that it couldn't be turned by hand even when it was out of the engine. This is where having a second engine lying around comes in handy, just robbed an adjuster and lock nut from this for the time being and all is well.

Hey,

So I was looking for new faces for my gauges on ebay when I came accross someone selling a complete decal set for the cb400f. The set includes the gauges. They are made of sticky back vinyl and are uv resistant. Pretty happy with them. They also made a decal to replace the original frame number decal specific for your bike if you give them your frame number. They are quite thick and seem to be pretty good quality.

Also ordered some 24 LED strips for the clocks as well, they arrived today and i siliconed them in so just gonna leave them set overnight and I'll put them back together tomorrow probably. The 24 LED strip is pretty much exactly the right length. I was trying to pick up some red flourescent paint as well and I was gonna paint the needle and the ring around the edge that you can see which is normally white but i haven't been able to find any red flourescent paint so I'll probably just leave it.

They look pretty dim here but this battery isn't fully charged. I put one of the faces back on and held the cover over it and they are plenty bright enough.

Seeing as you're getting all tech with the gauges, perhaps you could find an old/cheap watch with tritium dials and pinch one of the vials from that and use it on you needle?

If you don't know what tritium is, it's a radioactive liquid that glows. It doesn't need sunlight to 'charge' like the paint. It's used in military style watches and gun sights. The liquid is in tiny vials. You could easily transplant one to the tip of your needle.

That way you could put a little radioactive sign on your gauge face too!

Hi Scott, I just picked them up on ebay by searching "24 LED strip", the ones I got were from the UK for the quick postage to Ireland so you might be better off looking for ones closer to you so you won't be waiting on them. Theres loads of them available from Hong kong on ebay too and they can be got in a few different colours. I think there all the same qauility really. They cost me about €8 I think and the only problem I had was the wires were very light so I just cut them off about an inch from the strip and soldered on slightly heavier wires. I'll get a proper pic of them in the dark when I'm finished so you can see what they're like.

Rick, never heard of that tritium stuff, I think that stuff would probably be impossible to find in Ireland though so I might have a look around again see if I can find anything esle before I put them back together. I just want to be able to see the needle at night when the lights are on. Ya I like the idea of the radioactive symbol though, could do it like Hednuts bio-hazard ones, they were pretty cool looking.

Got my gauges finished anyway and they turned out even better than I expected, i eventually found some red flourescent paint in an art shop, its just acrylic paint but it should last fine inside the gauges.

The pics make them look much brighter than they actually are, they almost look dazzling in the pic but there really just fine. The flourescent paint on the needles is really handy too.

No they weren't too difficult once you take it slow, getting them apart I just prized up the chrome ring all around from underneath with a small flat screwdriver and then I kinda prized it a bit straighter with a pliers(with tape around it so you don't scratch the chrome) until I was able to get the chrome ring off. Once the chrome ring is off that's it. I had a bit of trouble alright putting them back together at the start because I had a rubber seal in the wrong place which was making it impossible to get the chrome ring back down over the gauges but once I figured that out they went straight back together no bother. The hardest part putting them back together was trying to not scratch the bezels, I'll have to give them a little touch up with the black in one or two places alright.

Well haven't been getting a whole lot done lately as the funds are low. Got the caliper installed with a phenolic piston from Kevin400f and I have the MC rebuild kit waiting to go in, just waiting on some braided hoses I ordered to arrive to finish up the front brake.

It was a nice sunny day today so I decided to get it out in the sunshine for a bit. Started it and left it warm up a bit. I seem to be having a rich idle problem though as far as I can tell. The bike starts ok on full choke and then I knock it down to just under half choke and give it a about another minute at that and then it'll idle without choke after that with the revs a bit low til it warms up fully. What makes me think it's a rich idle is the fact that the idle is a bit rough once it warms up fully. The revs will start to rise a little bit until you blip the throttle. Also the plugs seem to be fouling up a bit. The bike has only been idling as it's not in a driveable condition yet except for me blipping the throttle a few times. I've done the full tune up procedure and I'm positive the carbs are spotless. Anybody any ideas

Picked up a 350f rear sprocket cover off ebay too but I'm not really gone on it. Here's how it sits at the moment anyway

Small update,
Got my braided hoses with black covers and got them installed. Picked up a goodridge kit that came with everything including the adaptor to go straight into the caliper. Had a small bit of a problem with my bleeder. Ordered a speed bleeder and just tried it first to make sure it was the right size. Threaded it in and then back out and there was what looked like a spring wrapped around the threads, so I removed it and tried it again in the caliper and the hole in the caliper was way too big. So I then realised what I thought was a spring is probably a helicoil. I never saw or used a helicoil before so I'm not 100%. I just put it back on the bleeder and it tightened up fine so I think it might be ok. Anybody see any problems this could cause? Also the phenolic piston is installed and everything seems to be fine so that's another thing buttoned up hopefully.
