Custom Exhaust, feedback?

The Jardine 4 to 2 rusted out on my 78' CB550, so instead of dropping 400 or so on a new exhaust, I got some brand new stock 09 sportster slip on's for free. Has anyone else done a custom exhaust on their bike, if so I wanna see how good it looks. Does mine look ok?

I think it looks good, better than the Mac muff that was on my 550 when I bought it [I've since replaced with a stock muffler].

I'm curious too, how's it sound?

Well I cut the Y pipe off the Jardine and the end off the muffler and right behind the baffle and welded them together, believe it or not it sounds exactly like it did b4, I dont know what they sound like stock because I bought mine with the Jardine on it but it sounds no different then that.

if it works i dont see any problems.
i have a hyabusa muffler on my g/f`s cb550  with a 4 into 1 sounds great.

Well it sounds like the jardine b4 the rusted holes lol, I thought it would sound deeper but it doesn't. I dont know if I like them yet so I didnt chrome dip them, so the weld will rust if I dont cover it.

I put a Harley muffler on my 550, it was a stock muffler for one of the big bore bikes, I had to cut the coupler off of the original muffler and weld it to the Harley muffler and add a bracket at the rear.

It has a quiet idol and a business like sound under acceleration and it flows well,. It did lean the bike out slightly

I've used OEM Harley mufflers on quite a few bikes. They're well made with really nice chrome, and "new" ones are basically free: seems like almost every Harley buyer takes the bike home and immediately replaces the stock mufflers. Ebay always has several for maybe $10.00/pair plus more for shipping. Total is about what PRC mufflers made of thin steel with bad chrome cost.

What is the diameter of the harley pipes?  I'll be looking into that option for my scrambler project as well.

I've got a similar harley pipe on my 550 as well. It was a tight slip fit into my 4-1, looked pretty new when I got it at a swap meet, and at $10 fit the bill just nicely. It's certainly stout and my guess is that it should last quite a while. I made a bracket which mounts to the passenger peg mount.

+1 on the quiet idle and it sounds good tearing through the gears. Can't speak to it's effect on jetting as so many other changes were made before it finally ran.

Also consider the VHT header paints as an alternative to chroming. Unless of course you want it chromed and have the cash.

the OD at the incoming flange end I believe was just shy of 2". Don't know the ID at that end as mine fit inside the secondary not over it.
