seafoam?
« on: October 03, 2010, 11:47:07 AM »
i was wondering how exactly to use seafoam on my 71 cb750. ive used it on cars and boats before but never on a bike so i want to make sure i do it right. i know in a car i usually just put about 50% in the gas, 25% in the oil, and 25% through the vacuum line. so what would be the proper use in a bike?

I don't think I'd put it in the oil of these bikes.  Put some in the gas per the recommended dosage.  I think it's something like 1.5 oz per gallon...  To suck in your vacuum port doesn't accomplish much for your carb.  It may clean up your combustion chamber some though.  It's used in the boating industry to "de-carbon" your combustion chamber to avoid ring damage.

o ok so just stick to putting it in the gas then. i guess it would be a pain in the ass pouring it through all 4 carbs evenly at the same time

I think plenty of folks use Seafoam in the oil, though I have heard Marvel is also great. I use Seafoam just before an oil change.

Try searching "Seafoam" within the forums and you'll find many threads like this one: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=23774.25 - they talk about putting Seafoam in oil on the second page.

I think the major difference is that Seafoam acts as an additive when put in a full tank of gas, but acts as a cleaner when put into your crankcase just prior to changing the oil (and filter!).

Some people put it in run it for a VERY short while and then do an oil change, you don't want to keep it in your oil for very long, it is basically naptha with a couple of other additives.

I am with the just before an oil change crowd, about 100 miles.

I "hope" it is helping to keep the piston rings clear of carbon.
