Strange rims on 76 cb550f. Please help identify
« on: June 27, 2018, 12:33:28 PM »

This is a basket case bike I pulled out of the woods.  Tag says that it's a 550f (76 model) but I can't figure out those rims on it.  Steel centres with aluminum rims.  What model are these from? Honda OEM of some sort.

Those are Honda Comstar wheels.  I think first used on the CX500.
Now  1972 CB350FX (experimental v2.0)
        1981 CB650c Custom with '79 engine (wifes)
        1981 CB650 engine
        2004 HD XL883C Custom
        1977 Yamaha XS750D (in progress)
Then 1972 CL175
        1964 Yamaha YGS-1T

Likely a direct swap on then. Looks like they tried a different dash too.

I just rescued it for the rims.  The rest of the bike is pretty toasty.

Unless you have a 400 belt drive twin, just take the pile back..
Unless you need a few bits..

What do you mean?  It looks like this 550f was rolling on these wheels.  Unless it was a half arsed hodge podge that looked good in the shop but never saw the road. It sat in the woods for 20 years

No 550 front end on it, nor wheels.
Motor was it open to elements, carbs on it?
 What can you use ?

Ah.. Well that's to be determined at this point.  It came home with me in a uhaul full of other stuff.  I pulled this one from the heap as the wheels caught my eye.  Also had a 75 550f complete in the trailer so even if the rims become a future use or a trade item, I'm ahead. Yes, the engine had the valve cover off to the elements and looks like crap.

Possibly a 78 CB750A front end on it, I have the same wheels as 19" front and 17" rear... what sizes are your rims? The forks look like a later model, DOHC or GoldWing 1000 possibly...

Wheels are worth their weight in scrap to most unfortunately.

The silver Comstars with the black (plastic?) shoes on the end of the spokes were first used on the 1978 CB400 Hawks.
They are not bad wheels. Even the CBXes used them for all 4 years.
1973 CB350F -sold
1974 CB350F -218 orig miles, sold
1976 CB750K - in restoration

They are not bad, but most consider them unattractive.. that and the cheesy upper motor mount.. always made the CBX  unattractive to me.
One more glaring fugly  thing on them, but we are getting of topic.

Thanks for the info lads.  Yes, I'm more a spoked rim guy but these could be dressed up or painted on some creation of mine some day.

My friend is doing a cafe racer job on a 360T.  I wonder about giving the thing to him for the rims.

Looks are subjective. I personally like Comstars. The Comstar wheels that were swapped on to my '76 750 are one of the reasons I bought it. Wire spokes belong on bicycles only, IMO.
