Shell Rimula Diesel Oil in SOHC4's?
« on: March 03, 2006, 02:39:24 PM »
Many moons ago there was some discussion about the best oil for our bikes, and some of our Euro/Brit pals (Harry, Steve D? I can't remember) mentioned a brand of Shell Diesel oil that is apparently a very nice synthetic that works well in our bikes, was it Shell Rimula? The local auto parts house has it on special for $86.00 (about $70.00 US) for 5 gallons, with a bonus 1 gallon pack so if it's the stuff, I might "stock up"? Lemme know guys, all my old beasts probably need an oil change! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Terry...What are you doing? You'll start that oil debate up all over again. :D Anyway, I believe it was Rotella that people were using.

Think it was Rotella 15/40, Terry. But you can give the counter guy a giggle by ordering "Rimula" :D :D

Ok Sean, I don't know how much giggling he'll do though, the stuff in the catalogue (in front of me as I type this) is called "Rimula"? Maybe he'll just laugh at me anyway? I'll let you know! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Yeah mate, it was 100 deg F yesterday, and will be in the 90's today too. Good ol' global warming will ensure that it stays in the 80's until around may, then maybe 3 months of cold weather (down in the 60's and 70's, brrrr!) before it warms up for another 6 months? It's hard Biffy, but someone's gotta do it, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D

note in diary, shift next to Terry. It's blowing straight from the antartic today making it a hard choice, freeze in the garage tinkering with the motor or go to the pub and tinker with my liver.

Damn, I guess I'll have no laughs at Terry's expense today :-[. Shell does indeed sell Rimula. I looked online and found some info on Rimula and it is described much the same as Rotella T. Rotella T does have a lot more applications listed and even has a Motorcycle forum on it's site:

Terry, I switched to Rotella oil. It is used in Diesel Truck whose motors  are under a great deal of stress. What I like is to 5w-50 weight, so I get that startup protection and when the bike is hot, I have the advantage of 50W. Rotella contains Zinc and Phosphorus which have been standard wear reducers for decades. Those two metals do not get along with Catalytic converters. We don't have them and neither do Diesel Trucks so it is not an issues. In NY there is no emissions test on bikes. If you find yourself in the Never Never ask a land train bloke what he is using.

To Terry and whoever may be interested,
I remember the "great oil debate"  and it was the 15/40 Shell oil. But another gentlman happened to mention that Walmart sold another 15/40 oil called SuperTech ( I believe it's made by Penzoil) that is much cheaper - .98 cents a quart.. And being the frugal man that I am, I gave it a go. I took two 750's with the 15/40 SuperTech and rode to Mobile, Al from my home in Boaz,AL, a 1000 mile round trip. The whole trip felt like we were riding in a frying pan - the asphalt was so hot. It was 100* plus. I was changing the oil at 1000 mile intervals and oil filters every 5000. I rode all year with the same brand of oil. Averaging 9 to 10,000 miles a year. The following year, I met Andy and Axl from the Easy Rider trip at Bud's in New Orleans. This time we had three 750's all running the same oil and it was hot as hell. It was in the 100's again and we got caught in rush hour when we were leaving New Orleans. Traffic was so tied up we could only move a few feet every five minutes. The bikes were so hot that the valves were pinging on all three bikes. We finally got out of traffic after 45 minutes. The bikes cooled down and came right back to normal. To this day I still run the same oil and change my filters the same and have never had a problem. My bike has 54,000 miles on it, the other has about 60,000 and the third says 38,000 but we have our doubts. So the choice is yours. The SuperTech is about $5.50 USD for a gallon.

I believe it is Rotella in the US and Rimula other places.  I'm not sure if the formulation is the same.  You could send an email to shell and ask if they use moly in the rimula.  Rotella contains no moly.  I use the Synthetic (5w-40) and have used the 15w-40 dinosaur based rotella.  My son uses the synthetic in his Kawasaki Ninja and Suzuki V-strom.  The synthetic definately makes for smoother shifting and gear changes in my bilke (75 550K).

That is why we Yanks hate Celsius, sounds too damn cold in the Winter and not as hot as you feel in the Summer. I will stay with the F word.

I know what you mean Bobby, I still think in F, so when I hear the temp in C I still have to mentally convert it. ;D
