VF500-MC site glass removal-anyone?
« on: September 28, 2010, 07:16:17 AM »
Does anyone know how to remove the site glass from a master cylinder? In this case a VF500 MC I'm using on Phaedrus (CB750).

I seem to rememebr a thread where someone had done this, and he had a replacement for it as well, which I think I need as my glass got foggy when I hit it with the soda blaster.

After getting it out I'll need to know about getting it back in with a seal.

If I recall correctly the Honda sight "glass" (likely polycarbonate) is in an aluminum bezel pressed into the body of the M/C.  I've never been able to successfully get one out and back in, but have come up with a fix for a few of them that had dried out and cracked from age.  I found a nickel fit the opening perfectly with some JB Weld to retain it.  This worked well on 3 different early 80's V-45 Sabre and Magna which is likely the same master you're using.

The sight glass was listed as a replaceable part on some early eighties Suzuki models if I recall correctly, but I also recall them being discontinued by the mid 90's and they were much larger diameter than the Honda item.

I wonder if something like Nexus plastic swirl & scratch remover followed by their polish would be sufficient to clean up the lens you have?

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. I was going to send the MC to Brown's for polishing and they requested that the site glass and piston guts be removed. I'm thinking now that I will try to polish the glass as has been mentioned, and polish the MC myself.

FYI to others, if you're going to soda blast the MC, mask off the site glass first. I tried to avoid it with the blast stream but I still hit it and it went foggy on me. Other than that the soda blaster worked wonderfully.
