Are these still available?
« on: September 28, 2010, 07:30:06 am »
I inherited a pair of coils what i would like to use, but they are missing the "threaded caps".  Does anyone know if they are still available?  Picture to aide in understanding:

I would be careful running those coils.  If I remember correctly they are a 3 ohm coil which requires a bit more power to work correctly (although you may want to research them just to make sure).  And since our CBs are pretty much maxed out in that catagory, you might want to keep a close eye on the charging system if you use them.

Should be ok on a 750, others may need Hondaman's resistor pack to compensate.

Thanks guys.  Alan, this is a set i saved from Chris during the flood.  They are labeled AW82-TRI which i think comes from a DOHC 750/900.  He said they would work for a 750 so i was going to give them a whirl.  I like the idea of being able to replace the wire.  I found this in my searching

If you can use another coil depends most of the primary circuil. The dohc 750/900 coils (AW82TRI) have a resistance of 2.1 ohm (primary) and 12 Kohm (secondary)
AFAIK(????) your coils have something like 4 Ohms at the primary circ. if so that would be quite a difference -> not good, too much current (good spark though, but only for a short time  :o )"

What is this resistor pack you speak of?   Is that the same thing as his magic ignition module??

Hondaman mentions those coils specifically in reply #55 http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=67543.0  you may need his resistor pack and you may consider a relay to power your coils while you're at it.  He has everything available.

Are there any other considerations I need to make if I install Dyna High energy coils using your ignition?

Thanks

If you're using Dyna's 3 ohm (or even less resistance, which I would not recommend) coils, I offer a Resistor Pack that protects the bike's wiring from the higher currents those units draw. The Ignition can handle the current, but typically the KILL switch on the handlebars slowly melts its solder (if the other connectors are in excelent shape) and goes bad over time from those coils. Some bikes slowly burn their little bullet connectors (the 2.5mm ones) from the extra current. Dyna recommends a 1-ohm resistor in series with those 3-ohm coils, but they don't sell one: now I do.  :D

These Resistor Packs are $15, plus shipping. Let me know which kind of coil you're using: I can get various resistances, too, for a few extra bucks. For example, the 2.2 ohm coils from the 1980 CB750 seem to be a popular (not the best approach) swap: those require 2 ohm resistors in these bikes. While these coils offer the replaceable wires, they are pulse-type CDI coils instead of dwell-type, so they will get pretty warm when run in a Kettering system.

Treeve

I think I gave Chris those coils ;) In any case I use them on my K4 with no issues.  Using stock wiring harness and nothing extra. Have been doing this for the past 9 years ;). if you order some more end caps please order a couple for me.

thanks
Andy
