Testing a Boyer ignition
« on: October 25, 2010, 04:00:49 PM »
A CB400F has just entered my life.

No doubt it's had a long and sordid past.  At some point some yo-yo decided to wire up a Boyer ignition.  He did it badly, not even following the directions printed on top of the unit.

How do I test this thing to see if it is useable?  Boyer website is no help.  And, if it passes the tests, what's it worth on the used market?

The installation instructions are printed right on top of the unit.

So it should be no surprise to anyone that some previous owner of this poor bike did not follow those instructions and the bike had no spark.

I replaced it with an OEM setup and the bike runs!

I'd like to determine if the box is any good, so if your instructions offer any kind of test advice I'd appreciate it.

Did you try hooking it up per instructions?

I did.  No spark.  A salesperson at Boyer sent me an email a little while ago with some trouble shooting tips.  At some point I will try hooking the thing up to a bike that I know is good and see what happens.

But for now I have other jobs to do.

If Boyer is a reputable company maybe you'll get a brand new unit.

It's an old mark III so has been superseded somewhat. If it's wired right, all four pots will spark twice in a crank revolution - test with the plug on the head and the ignitionon just by turning the engine over. Also the coils should discharge on switching off if all is wired right so again, plug on the head and turn the key off should see a spark. If stock works and this doesn't it's most likely to be a poor earth connection as in my experience the digital boxes are pretty bomb proof as long as you aren't jumping up and down on them!

remove the plate and take a look at the rear,a dry solder joint might be visible?the rotor isnt "locked in",it might be wrongly installed or slipped, instructions on the black box are wiring only, the rotor and printed circuit plate must be set up correctly first.,these fire all plugs at once.
