Briggs & Stratton Head Conversion
« on: September 30, 2010, 07:08:11 AM »
I am part of a group creating a supermileage vehicle. We are given a Briggs & Stratton 3.5 HP MODEL 091202 TYPE 1016E1A1001 engine. We would like to replace the head, converting the L Head engine into an OHV and OHC engine. If anyone knows of a head that would work for this or has any suggestion please let me know.

Not what I would call an SOHC,  but Briggs and Stratton have a whole line of OHV utility engines that would probably be a lot easier to modify your L block to take.  This forum generally thinks only in terms of Four Cylinder single overhead cam (SOHC) engines.

You will probably get a lot better response on a topic specific forum.  Google "briggs and stratton forums" and you get a few good links.

Good Luck

Cut a 4 cyl bike head.. 1 chamber..
or dirtbike head that is near that bore size..
Mount a toothed belt pulley, on one end of crank, goung up to the cam.

Forgot to ask, if you dont have a removable cylinder on that engine type, prepare to spend a lot of hours milling a head, even if you cast a head of your own design. You can utilize cam, rockers, valves etc.. out of a bike head..

I'm one of the MPG obsessed members on the forum... I know of many tricks to help reduce detonation tendencies, increase fuel vaporization and homogenization, increase flame speed and therefore increase overall efficiency. Can you elaborate on your plans? I'm extremely interested in your project. :)
