silencer Q
« on: March 06, 2006, 12:21:38 PM »
would a glasspack muffler from a car basically be the same as running a straight pipe?(thats not what I want to do, I want a little back-pressure)
summit has some glasspacks with only a 4" diameter that, once they are painted flat black and wrapped with a little tape, might not look too bad
I've also looked into doing a carpy muffler out of a 2 1/2 in exhaust extension with a baffle put in
I'm not a big fan of the silver megaphone silencer that I have now. it sounds great, but its kinda f-ugly

I know their is a member here on the boards who is running a glasspak for a muffler on his CB.
???
A glasspak would give you some backpressure , but not much. The longer the exhaust is in a pipe, the more
backpressure it will have. Like on a racecar, you want to run open headers, so the motor can "breathe" on the high end of the track.

I am sure someone else will chime in to help....

I believe the user who is running the "glasspak" is " THE GREAT LUMBEE".
Shoot him a Private Message, I am sure he will be glad to help you out...

...see the pic attached...its a cherry bomb, which I understand to be a glass pac.  The lines on the muffler line up perfect with the header, so I'm not sure if it was modified or came from the factory that way.  Either way, I love the sound on it, but its not any louder than the other 4/1 I had on it.  I do think it allows the motor to "breath" more, as I'm running slightly lean with the stock jetting of 105...I plan to move up to 110s...

...its just bolted up at the head.  I know, I know it needs some support at the muffler right?  I thought the same thing when the PO had it on his bike with no support at the rear, but not so.  I only have it bolted up at the head, and its on there solid.  When I got from the PO, the muffler was attached to the head by a U-bolt.  I've since welded the muffler to the header.

the curve on both ends of you glasspack, Mark, makes me think it was designed to fit in place of an offset/offset muffler... So if anyone else is looking for one.. ask for a offset one or you will just get a straight tube muffler..

If you use a glasspack try to find one WITHOUT louvers (louvers are the little v shaped pieces of metal that push out into the airflow which cause a lot of air turbulence and restricts HP) instead, try to find a PREFERATED core glasspack.. IE: Thrush glasspack (tiny preforated holes = loud) or Dynomax Bullet (Larger preforated holes = quieter) I know for a fact the dynomax bullets come in 12" and 18" because I have the 12" ones on my mustang.. (UNGAWA... they sound sweet!)

yeah, I was looking on summitracing's site and they have their own brand glasspacks with a 12"  raw steel case(which I think would look awesome painted black with some header wrap), and they have the bullet's, but I forgot the length on those. plus they're only 20-30 bucks!

proteal, I looked at your gallery and I looks like we both have some of the same ideas for our bikes

The summit ones are the louvered cores.. they are also uncoated steel so they will rust out pretty quick.. especially if you don't ride long enough to get the pipes hot and evaporate any moisture there might be. The Bullets are fully aluminumized inside and out.. and will not rust out.. plus it is a preforated core.. so.. MORE POWA!

hey thanks. I was actually going to get the summit one because of the raw steel( I was going to paint or powder it). but I don't want a louvered one, so, its bullet time

one more thing about the louvered core.. because the louvers are so big.. over time the matting material blows out the louvers.. so over time they become louder and louder and louder.. with the bullets preferated core.. the matting material won't blow out..

got it the other day. it doesn't fit with the center stand down, so I'll have to get an offset extension piece to bring it out, but when I slipped it on with the stand up, it looks and sounds AWESOME!
now I just have to wait for the snow to melt and my seat to come back and its riding time!!!!

hey me too!(turned 27) mine was the 15th
happy birthday!

sooooo, the video......
the muffler just isn't going to work the way it is. I've decided to forego the installation of that until it gets warm and I've been riding it for a while. I thought about just taking off the center stand, but the side stand doesn't hold up thew bike for #$%*. the bike immediately rolls forward and would fall if I wasn't standing right there. I think I'm going to have to grind back the stop a little
I will however get to it sometime in the next couple of weeks when I have more time and I'm not working so much. I just want to get this done right instead of compromising quality for time.

nope, didn't change a thing. I need to get an extension and offset it up a little bit. it sits pretty low, but it sounds awesome

next weekend I'll get some more RPM's for ya. hopefully I'll have my seat back too!
