Oil Hoses - Before ..... & After
« on: March 05, 2006, 04:42:21 PM »
I am very pleased with how my new oil hoses turned out ...... glass bead blasted the fittings and used Earls Clamps with real stainless braided hose from Summit.  They should look good on my red Cafe' bike.

thanks Mike......will be looking for it.  I've got the tank on with my old rear mount but its just got one side over the tab on the tank. Other side is broke/rotted off.

I SOoooooo wanted to ride the beast today. Got my front fender cut down and on, along with a temporary tail light.....I just couldnt figure out the wiring problem with the headlight/starter circuit. Maybe with TwoTireds help I can get it going for a ride this week. Supposed to be in the 70s here Friday and Saturday.

just have to ask, but what is the pressure in those lines?, the originals are swaged onto the hoses, will normal calmps be strong enough... just wondering... BTW they look HORN...peace

Regular clams OK up to 80-100 psi. SOHC oil system has more less.

Just to double check - the hose is 1/2" ID, right?  They look great!

Thanks all, they are the same ID as stock confirmed by the fitting barbs into the hose ends ... but I have to say putting those fitttings into the hose ends with those tight tolerance clamps and stainless braid was a royal B@*ch  >:(

I feel good about the lines capability since my oil pressure is 60 psi cold and 45 ish hot, and the hoses are designed for engine fluids ..... if they don't work my ankle will be the first to know!!  :o

Can't wait to get the bike back together ......

Those lines will be more than fine.
"AN" line is good for fuel, oil , trans. fluid, etc.

I think my project is in need of some black lines w/ black fittings...
That would look tight ! ;D

You should do a little faq with part numbers. I would like to do something like that. Would look nicer than the old black.

I don't think the pressures are going to be a huge issue as one line is the return to the oil tank (vented to atmosphere) and the other is the feed line to the main pump, so that line would actually see a slight vacuum, rather than a positive pressure.

You guys talkin to me ? ??? ;D
I will gladly document my oil line project for ya, and the overall good of the SOHC communitiy..
You might want MIKEB4 to do it, as I won't be changing my lines for awhile....

Hey guys .... sorry I was workin' !!

Give me a chance to work on a FAQ, I need to get the Summit catalog out and pull the parts numbers I used .... it's been a few month's since I ordered the stuff.

Also, I have another line set I could use for some pics on steps to remove the swaged stock fittings from the stock oil lines and assemble the new ones.

Maybe I should go into the business of building braided CB750 oil lines !!   ???

Has anyone done this for their brake lines that they would like to teach and share? I'm thinking of changing my 1978 CB550K lines to braided. Pictures and numbers help me alot...lol

Has anyone done this for their brake lines

I wonder what kind of pressure is generated within the brake system under stress, and would this type of fitting be up to the task?  ???

The "Fittings" that MIKEB4 used are really nothing more than a hose clamp that looks like a AN fitting. For the oil lines, this is great to hold the pieces togther, and give a nice, overall finished look. These WILL NOT work with a brake application, or anything involving decent to high pressure.

They sell dash 3 & dash 4 AN hose and fittings, for brake setups. It is basically what you see in the Goodridge " Wall of brakes" at most V-Twin shops. That is made for brake applications, and able to withstand the pressure that the master is putting out.

Sorry for the long post, but I just wanted to let people know this wont work. We had a customer at my last shop who did this , without asking anyone, and had a fatal brake failure because of it. The "Fitting" at the caliper popped off under a hard brake lever squeeze, and that was the end of it for him..

I plan to do the same thing with my rear brake resevoir feed hose to the master ...... however I am using Galpher stainless braided brake lines for the pressure side of my fronts (dual lines) and rear. It's a typical upgrade item for street bikes ...... I used Galpher lines I bought on eBay for a deal for other OEM applications that were the right length for my split fronts and single rear on my SuperSport.  Speigler and Goodrich would work just as well as long as the right ends were mounted, I picked up some Goodrich lines on a deal for my next project.

Here is an example of a search I used - http://search.ebay.com/galfer-brake-lines_Motorcycle-Parts_W0QQcatrefZC6QQcoactionZcompareQQcoentrypageZsearchQQcopagenumZ1QQfromZR9QQfromZR9QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ3QQfstypeZ1QQftrtZ1QQftrvZ1QQsacatZ10063QQsspagenameZSTRKQ3aMEFSRCHQ3aSRCH

Here are pics of some of the supplies to give you an idea of the difference between fluid transfer hose and high pressure hydraulic line ... the Earls clamps and Aeroquip hoses are what I used for the oil hoses and rear brake resevoir supply, and the Goodridge line is a brake line to use from master to caliper.

Lastly is a pic of the lines mounted ... when I first mounted them during buildup I did a single line from master to caliper with a loop over to the second caliper.  For the reassembly I am going to run dual cables to the master with a single cable to each caliper.  I think that arrangement will be easier to bleed the lines ..... the loop was slow to get all the air out even with a mity-vac.  FYI ...
