my friend mentioned something about using a match book to file down and adjust the points. i was wondering if anyone has any experience with this method?

Works sorta OK, it's just fine sandpaper with a chemical additive. Make sure you clean the points off super well afterward, the chemical accelerates corrosion and any sand between the points causes arcing or non-closing.
Basically it's a desperation fix. Use a points file or fine emery cloth (crocus cloth) or even wet/dry sandpaper before resorting to a matchbook.
Strike-anywhere matches used to have plain sandpaper but now it also includes the chemical stuff. Just try striking one on normal sandpaper vs the stuff on the matchbox. On sandpaper it's an iffy proposition to get one to light at all but on the box they flare up with a gentle swipe. These new matches don't explode loudly when shot from a pellet gun either.

If I'm reading your post right orkid, you would only ever file the points to clean the contact surface, not to change the points gap, which would only be done by adjusting the point and using a 14 thou. feeler gauge  ;)
