More questions!
« on: October 02, 2010, 08:14:52 PM »
Hi,

Alright, I'm rebuilding my first engine, a CB550 motor, and I need 4 exhaust valves and guides, and tappet adjusters.

The exhaust valves are bent, and two of the guides are cracked. The person I bought it off has told me to bring the head in and will try and match some parts up for me.

My question is, is it alright to use second hand parts? I'm assuming he means to match up some second hand parts, and I feel that they are not the sort of parts you want to be replacing with used bits and pieces....

dont use any used parts, check david silvers site for parts, they have a lot for these and our dollar is good,i just had two sets of front pads and a rear shoe set to my door for 72 bucks, why or what bent the valves?have you got that problem sorted?cam chain and tensioner and guide.,maybe cam sprocket if its worn looking.

The engine was sitting unused and by the look of it in the open for many years.
The person I purchased the bike from started the engine up to see if it would run, apparently it did run, but the valves must have been stuck and were bent.

I've got a 650 cam on the way, the cam sprocket looks alright to me, but I'll take to someone who knows what they are doing to see if its good to go. I need a new cam chain, I was told not to get one with a master link, but how do I change it without a master link? as I'm not splitting the case.

Another question, I'm looking at getting some work done on the head, not sure how much I'll see how my budget goes, but are stronger valve springs/ race springs the way to go?

the standard springs are fine, your not going to be revving its ring off with severe down shifting are you?,race stuff is race stuff, these guys break engines and rebuild them all the time, you want longevity, stronger springs can wear lobes and followers quicker and stress guides a little more, just get the head porting cleaned up,like match the intakes to it etc,you dont want to lose any bottom end pull.,im guessing youll be using a 4to1 pipe?what carbs are on it?pds or the earlier type one?the later pds can be a little leaner, the cam will exerbate that a little.,take your time, ide split the cases if its mostly apart now,you can really get some crud out of nooks and crannies that way.
