Tire rubbing swingarm..
« on: October 05, 2010, 11:38:14 AM »

Today I put on a new rear tire.  It is a 130/90 18, spitfire.

When I put it on, I noticed that it was barely rubbing the swingarm on the right side. I adjusted the tire back as far as I could, without pulling the chain too tight.  Now it barely clears it, maybe 1/4 of an inch...maybe less.

I took it for a ride, and it is definitely rubbing on that side.  It has scraped the tread a little over there, and taken a few little bites out of the tread in some spots.

Has anyone else had this problem?  I was thinking of filing down the swing arm just a tad over there to help out with clearance....is that a bad idea?

Methinks you are missing a spacer somewhere.

Yeah something doesn't sound right. Technically, a 130 is too wide for the stock rim, but if you got it mounted up, it should fit in the swingarm. The brake stay is the first thing to hit on the right side. And the chainguard on the left.

I've got a 140 on a K2 (3" rim) and there's a good 3/4 inch clear of the swingarm on the right. But the brake stay is right there.

I have a 130 spitfire on my 76 with no rubbing issues.
Post pics of the left and right side of the rear wheel.

I have about 3/8" on the left side and a little more room on the right.

cheers

There's a small spacer inside the bearing retainer on the left. It holds the bearing retainer about 5mm away from the left side chain adjuster. IF the spacers were messed up you'd know it. The swingarm will hardly allow more or less spacers.

Need pics.

I will post pics tonight.

maybe the chain is too short.....causing the tire to be pulled to far forward?  That's all I can fathom..

Thanks for the help, I'll get the pics up when I get home.
No I don't think. My 140 clears the SA all the way forward.

Get some pics, it will become clear quickly.

+1 with MC how close is the brake stay? I can't tell from pic.seems like it would have to hit that first.

The marks for adjusting should be in the same position on both sides. I would remove the wheel and start from scratch, something just isn't right..

Don't see how the chain could be straight the way you did it. You can use a string to check it or straight edge. I'm pretty sure the manual shows how. Don't ride it till you solve this I would take it back off to check spacer is in proper side and right direction. Look at parts diagram to see if all parts are correct PO may have mixed it up.

It's a happy medium ;)
As long as the chain and wheel run straight.
The marks on the adjusters should be your best friend, but I have had mine off a bit at times ::)

Take one more look before you ride it.

How about you pull the axle again & slip both the adjusters onto it side by side & check if the index marks match up? they might not be a matched pair if you know what I mean.
It wouldn't hurt to check those swing arm bushes while you're down there.  ;)

take the chain off and back off the brake.  spin the tire and check for wobble.  possibly a wheel bearing issue.  altho the picture of the right side spacer looks like it has marks where it once rode in a seal?    double check everything.

I've nothing to add. Looks weird, but should work. Good luck.

Thanks everyone for taking a look at this.  I am really at a loss here, but I know it just doesn't make any sense.

When the axle is put on and adjusted the same on both sides, the wheel should be relatively in the center of the swingarm....

I'll post if I figure something out...
I'm re-reading form the beginning. Process of elimination.

So you just put on the 130? What width was the prior tire and did it rub?
