Need help again, this time with the swingarm.
« on: October 11, 2010, 01:35:14 PM »
I removed the rear wheel and shocks today. I noticed the swingarm stays in whatever position I leave it in. The bike has been sitting for about 10 years now.
I cannot get the swingarm bolt out.
I removed the acorn nut from the right side and the bolt takes a lot of torque to turn. When it does turn it doesn't back out but neither can I smack it out with a hammer.
What am I missing?

Yep, knock it out with a hammer and something long and skinny, like a ratchet extension.

I just pulled my swing arm off of my K6.  I have 18K miles on the clock.  Mine was more free than yours and I was able to tap the bolt to get it started, then pull it out by hand.  I think my swing arm has been re-worked but the collar (steel tube inside) was galled and I had noticeable end-play.... it was time.  The recommendation from "the swing arm master" is to find another swing arm bolt with grease fittings on the ends (earlier versions... pre-K4?).  He (HondaMan) also makes bushings and will re-work your swing arm if you ship it to him.

Back to your question... if you have to get "rough" with it, try hard to hit it in the center with something somewhat blunt so you don't distort the end or threads.  It might not matter if you'll be replacing the bolt with one that has grease fittings  :-\

Suzuki GN400 - Ignition fixed!
03 KLR650 - Doesn't do anything very well but.. well.. does everything.

I got it out. Had to smack the fool out of it. Lot's of rust on the inside with caked up grease.
