CB500 smokey
« on: October 07, 2010, 07:50:12 AM »
Bike was pretty smokey so got new pistons and rings put in but bike is still smokey. Did mechanic do something wrong or could it be another problem. Iv'e had to take engine out again for mechanic to have another look at. He normally only works on brittish twins.

If its a CB750 (engine out) then for sure one would have to replace the valve stem seals along with the rings to quell smokiness. Checking the stem to guide clearance, but these are usually fine unless its an F2. But the seals will turn to stone even with low mileage. Perhaps, especially with low mileage.

Don't know how common this would be on a British twin as well.

My bad, its a 500. Nevertheless... same applies...

I didn't think you had to pull the engine on a 500...

Usually the it's i the head as in valve stem seals get dry and crack or shrink. Valve stems can be worn from misadjusted lifters or time. Burned valves, etc. I'm going through the same thing right now #3 cylinder on my 550 but I'll wait for this winter to pull the head off.
