Co-worker RANT!
« on: October 05, 2010, 06:57:13 PM »
Hope you guys don't mind me blowing off some stem but my co-workers have me way POed!
I work tech support. My "tier2" guys are ignoring all thier work. They spend thier days playing WOW, StarCraft2, and posting on facebook. Thier tech skills suck, they don't troubleshoot or try and fix anything. They usually just re-image the machine and say it's good.
My supervisor is even worse. He looks at porn most of the day. When I fix his screw ups he gets upset with me because I'm undermining his autority. IN the last 5 days I've fixed three of his screwed up tickets because he won't do basic troubleshoting.

I've worked in IT for over a decade and this one of the worst places I've seen when it comes to customer service and quality. I'm embarrassed to tell people I work with these guys.

Start thinking of them as "cow-orkers", and instead of getting mad you can have a little silent joke to yourself, and smile at their typical annoying traits.

Why aren't those sites blocked by your network admin? When I was working, you couldn't get to facebook, evilbay, or anything else non-work related. As for porn, you wouldn't even consider it as it would get you fired immediately. Maybe you need to chat with the admin guy.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

All I can say is politics prevent the blocking of many sites.
It's not really a problem with the sites it's a problem with the people in my area using them. I forgot to mention Netflix also.
When I work at other places we would surf the web or naybe have a movie on when it was dead. These guys always have this stuff on. Everyone knows it from the CIO on down and it's tolerated.
I'm strting my own at home computer shop/small networking biz because I need out and can't live with this type of work ethic.

We're not always as organizes as that.

Looking is a heck of a lot easier than finding.  :-[

I'm starting my own home based computer shop. I've only had 2 customers so far but it's a start. I'm staying with the job till I get this business of the ground.
BTW it was Netflix, WOW, and Starcraft today.
I spent the day installing PDU extenders and sensors in the server room.
I wish I was allowed to write a GPO to block this stuff from thier profiles.

I think the advice of documenting these things can only be helpful later when sh1t hits the fan which it invetiably will in these situations, but don't blog about.
That said, I've read your posts a couple of times here and, though Ive worked with computers since 1984, I honestly have no idea what you do.
That said, I've worked in a number of offices and organizations with jerks and going over their heads doesn't help, but having a record of infractions, bad policy, wasting of resources, etc. will inevitably help you at least get some of the frustration out of you.
This project started in confusion and will end in disarray.

In this job I'm helpdesk. I answer calls and do initial troubleshooting and issue resolution. I send it up to the techs, project manager or network admin if it can't be resolved on my level. I'm also the guy that runs cables through walls, sets up hardware. Server install, desktop install, and I do server monitoring. I also go out and do deskside support when my tier 2 are too busy.
I'm not sure if documenting anything will help at all. This has been normal operating procedure for 4 of the people since before I started. All levels of management know about it.

Apperantly your cow-worker's jobs aren't on the line or they would definitely change thier attitude. I am 100% sure there are good IT people currently unemployed that would relish the chance at a job where you work. I am also sure they would enjoy proving that they are good employees and work hard over collecting unemployment checks and worrying about losing their homes. Your office workers obviously don't know that feeling. It's not a good time to be unemployed!

One thing has been bugging me.
If your online name is actually your real name, is it really that smart to be slamming your employers on a public forum?
Anyone with two brain cells to rub together can Google a name and read what comes up.  People at my work have been fired for things they posted on FB and other online sites.  I'm not trying to be a d***, I'm just sayin'.
