1974 cb550 4 pod filters and Jet question
« on: October 07, 2010, 11:26:28 AM »
 :o
Hows it going everybody. I am cleaning my carbs and found four pod type air filters I was going to put on instead of factory air box. I was wondering what size jet I would have to use. I have a 4 into 1 exhaust with glasspack muffler, also the size jet i have in it now is a 110. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys

Same as Sinister above.  Only have mine turned 3/4 out.

If there is no reason to change to pods, them stick with the stock airfilter. You will struggle to find the perfect jetsizes for a few months, and then realize the stock setup was really better.

Unless you have a serious change in exhaust system or engine mods and have to rejet anyway, it's just not worth the trouble. There are a lot of people here that say their bike runs great with pods, but I haven't seen any dyno printouts that proof that a stock bike will make more power with pods.

if you by some fluke chance have some REAL honda 110s ill buy them off you for 10 a piece. too many chinsy dealers on ebay sell junk jets marketed as a certain size and they can be up to 10 off.
im running pods, built head, port polish, lapped valves. emgo filters, stock 100s, 1 1/2 turns out, mad power through through the whole rpm range. so i wouldnt rejet at all, keep the stock airbox.

One of the most discussed topics on the tech forum, and probably a few other sub-forums as well.  Clear your schedule for the next few days and type "pods" into the search field.

1977 CB550  running 115 with needle in the 3rd position, pods and 4 into 2 cross over drag pipes.  Don't listen to the stockers. Sure it will run better with the stock air box but it's your bike do what you want with it.  I think a stock airbox on my bike (see avitar) would look a little goofy!!

Good point, but xedge4lifex's bike is far from stock. And mine isn't exactly stock either.

It's pretty easy to screw on some pods, and your bike wil probably still run ok. But's it's extremely difficult to get it perfect. If you've done a little work to your motor, like porting or bigger pistons, you probably want your bike to run close to perfect to take advantage of the enginework. Like I said, I've never seen any proof that a 550 with pods runs perfect. Show me a dyno printout, and I will believe you. My bike's been on the dyno twice, and although it makes more power than a stock 550 (with pipes, hot cam and ported head) it's still a little lean at some rpm's and rich at others.

I'm not being a smartas$, just trying to help. Be prepared to fiddle your carbs forever if you change to pods.

"Don't listen to the stockers" .......silly advice if i have ever heard it. Pods are a pain in the arse and make your bike sound like its trying to suck your balls out the leg of your pants....Really....it sounds like #$%*. Apart from that and unless you have a fair bit of work done to the bike including head work there will be absolutely no benefit and in fact it WILL run worse. I am building a 1000cc monster with all the best gear and i am still trying to work out how to run an airbox and i will do it, these bikes run much better with a flow of stable undisturbed air.
