Stripped Shock Studs
« on: March 09, 2006, 01:35:12 PM »
my CB 550 has stripped shock studs, and my bro-in-law has it at the welding shop. he doesn't have any ideas on how to fix it well and making sure it doesn't tear anything up. Any ideas here? I've thought of cutting off the old ones and welding some bolts on. the only problem with that is making sure the smooth section is long enough for the shock eyes.

thanks
Steve

I had the same problem last year on my right rear shock. A local mechanic fixed it this way. The old stud was drilled out and the hole was re-tapped. A new bolt was inserted into the hole with a nut on the backside beneath the frame and welded from the underside. Can't tell there was ever a problem. Hope this helps. Dr. Mark

Some clown "shortened" the threaded portion of the studs on my K3 frame, making it impossible to mount the grabrail, so I cut the remainder of the studs flush, drilled and tapped them for 10 x 1.25mm, and now use stainless bolts to secure the shocks.

The beneft here is that to mount my shocks I first loosely attach them by the clevis mount on the swingarm, then push them over onto the top mount, fit the grab-rail, then the bolt, a spring washer and a flat washer, tighten it all up and it's done, and much easier than the conventional method! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

thanks guys, drilling tapping and using bolts sounds like a plan.
