Topic: point cam grease

Hello everybody. What can you use to grease the point cam now that it seems hard to find the stuff made specifically for it.Thank you very much.

I haven't messed with points in about 10 years but the last time I did I used dielectric silicone grease.Just a small amount.

I know they do make grease for this specific purpose, but I've always used regular old all-purpose grease and never had any problems.

It's not THAT hard to find, NAPA sells it in a little tube, (enough for 350 years) for a couple bucks.

Old Fart says that it is still available from 2 sources. However, I have not yet had a chance to try to buy some.

Why not use Vaseline (Petrolium jelly) ....probably in the cupboard somewhere already (considering the amount you'll need)
Watchmakers used to use it as a grease.

I think the label says it all, the fact that it is a hi-temp application. Not sure all greases one might substitute are up to it.

Vaseline melts quite easily.  You don't want this stuff melting and slinging around only to leave the points cam when you really need it and contaminating your points.

Yeah, an old timer told me that the grease he used to use when he had points (he went electronic about 30 years ago) was roughly the consistency of bee's wax.  He said he built up a tiny wedge of the stuff on the edge of the fibre pad (those things have a specific name, but I forget it) which faced away from the rotation of the cam.  That way it was self-applying for some time.

If I can find some of the Delco cam grease I might try my friend's approach.  For now though, I'm not sure the Harley Davidson stuff is firm enough....?

I agree.  The Delco is much the preferred way to go.  It's stickier, thicker, and yes, it does resemble beeswax.  :-)
