Anyone have problems loading updates with XP lately?
« on: October 09, 2010, 07:40:55 AM »
My server computer has not been loading the updates lately, home microsoft edition. Even when I try and force it to it just says the updates did not update successfully. I ran combofix and I ran malwarebytes too, any suggestions? I also run AVG and ad-aware.

My other computer on the system that I primarily use for email, surfing, etc. takes all the updates with no problems.

Had a couple of machines fail updates. If it's throwing an error code search Google for that error.

IIRC, it's just some file keeping track of updates that's out of sync with what you actually have.

Meh, you would think they would patch something like that if more than a few people were having that problem.

try the updates then right click my computer icon and click manage. This will bring up the computer management console. Look through the event log to see what failed. It could be a BITS(Background Intelligent Transfer Service) problem.

error code 0x8007F0DA comes up for one of the first error codes and the cryptographic services were already set to automatic so it looks like I proceed to step 2- dabble in the registry- gotta backup and restore first in case I muff it the first time.

You could always take note of the updates and download them by hand and install them that way.

when I allowed the last XP update it made Task Manager display a message that my administrator had made TM unavailable....

I am, of course, the administrator of that PC.  I did not knowingly make that choice, and I'll be damned if I can find a way to turn it back on.

Anyone else had this issue?  where you able to correct it?

That sounds weird, I tried to manually load the update for the time adjustment and it wouldn't let me, I did all that crap in the article and when I tried to manually load it it said a certain file wasn't there. So it is still missing about 9 updates at this point.

Copy this test into notepad and save it. Rename the file to fixbits.bat and run it. It will temporarily modify the security desriptor to allow for updates.

Here's the text

@echo off
Echo This batch file will Set Service Object Security for WUAUSERV & BITS.
REM Result will be written to %temp%\SetServiceObjectSecurity.log and then launched in Notepad.
Echo Please wait...
@echo on
sc sdset bits "D:(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;SY)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)(A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;;AU)(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;PU)" >%temp%\SetServiceObjectSecurity.log
sc sdset wuauserv "D:(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;SY)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)(A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;;AU)(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;PU)" >>%temp%\SetServiceObjectSecurity.log
@echo off
notepad %temp%\SetServiceObjectSecurity.log
Echo Open %temp%\SetServiceObjectSecurity.log for SUCCESS entry.
Echo Open the Services applet from control panel to see if the services are started.
Echo For any errors; post on http://groups.msn.com/NTarabia
@echo off
Pause

It didn't work, it only allowed me to update the Malicious software removal tool.

Alright, tried to run KB 2158563 manually and it tried to install hotfix and when I tried to run it said 'Setup could not veryfy the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make sure the Cryptographic service is running on this computer.

I thought the cryptosvc was reset with the baloney the support made me do.

Alright, went back to step one-

Method 1: Rename the Edb.log file
Rename the Edb.log file, and then try to install the program again. To rename the Edb.log file, follow these steps:

   1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then OK.

      Note On a Windows Vista-based computer, click Start, type cmd in the Start Search text box, right-click cmd.exe, and then click Run as administrator.
   2. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
      ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2\Edb.log *.tst

The computer said the system cannot find the path specified.  Zonealarm was not letting me toggle cryptosvc so I disabled it to toggle it.

When I attempted to rename the Catroot2 folder the comp said a duplicate file name exists or the file cannot be found.

Crap.

Huh, I guess the combo of shutting down zonealarm temporarily and running through steps 1-3 in the knowledge article finally did the trick.

Somehow I think Zonealarm was blocking access to crypsvc and that was mucking the whole process up.

Okay, now that Dukie has his problem resolved, I'll put a weird one out.  We got these machines donated to where I volunteer (see sig).  They're P4, 3 ghz from the U.S. Marshals office.  Totally wiped, including operating system.  Used recovery disc to reload XP.  Successfully updated to SP3.  Did the remaining 86 updates and 13 optional(hardware) updates, including Explorer 8.  After restart Explorer wouldn't start, no matter what I tried.

Started over.  Did the SP3  update.  Now Explorer acts weird so when navigating from home page, it opens a new window and freezes.  I left it last night to auto update at 3 AM.  I will get a report sometime this morning, and if I have to go back down there for this, I'm tempted to take Mr.Sledge!  Any thoughts?

It's either that or Mr. Sledge.  And if I re-wipe, I will not use the recovery disc when I redo for the third time.  Master disc only.

If you have drive diagnostic software on your computer you might want to hook up the system drives to see if you have a lot of bad sectors.

Check event log to find the specific issues that it's having. Also are you talking about windows explorer, or Internet Explorer?
