The aluminum covers are beautiful when polished:

What technique did you use to clean the cover?  It looks quite nice when polished.

I'm excited to see how things go for you. I'm about to start my "winter makeover" as well on virtually the same bike. Keep the posts coming. And lots of pics!

Not trying to thread jack or anything.

I'm not sure what he used for stripping the tank but Aircraft stripper is some good stuff, not the spray can tho, the quart can of jell you brush on. It will eat paint quick, and if you get it on you it burns like H#!! :o.

Ok, Im through thread jacking.

Good start on the rebuild man! Waiting to see how it comes out, keep it up!

I thought my bike(see avatar or sig) didn't have an original paint job because I've not seen anything on the model breakdown about solid maroon but I've seen about 4 bikes with the same paint color as ours had, cafe550. That color wasent a factory color, was it?

as i was stripping i seen the sunrise orange under the maroon on my bike....so it has been painted before....

as for the stripper i just got a can at the hardware store, think it was called EZ-strip it was in a can and i had to brush it on....worked very well

nope my brother paints cars and tractors and whatnot for a side job and he has a few colors thats i could choose from and the prowler orange looks sweet i think

since he is the one painting it and he has left over paint from a few jobs i dont have to pay for any of it :)
