Maybe I should make a project thread: (UPDATE) Got it started!
« on: October 10, 2010, 08:49:20 AM »
As the title says I have no spark.
I got the carbs fixed
Found out the bike has the wrong clutch cable.
Tried to start the bike and nothing.
Turned the kill switch to "on" and tried again.
Still nothing.
Pulled a plug and replaced it with new.
Tested plug outside of the motor, and no spark.
Time to get the multimeter out.
I'll keep everone updated.

If the battery is good [12+ V], sounds like a bad connection.
Check all wiring...

Already on it.
BTW I'm about ready turn burn my Clymer manual.
Here's what it says for testing coils
"Electrical Testers are available in many service shops to bench test ignition coil. If one is available, use it. However the easy way to test for a defective coil is to substitute a know god one."

Way to go Clymer that was highly informative. Where are the resistance values? This book is pretty crappy. No test for plug cap resistance or plug wires either. I guess it's time to use the search function when I get back home.

OK, it's a 72 CB500. It's got a Ricks Motorsport RR unit. I'm looking up the wiring specs on that and saw a test procedure in the FAQ for the coils. First I'm going to take the points cover off and make sure everything is OK in there

Kill switch is toast.
Can I short the black/white to a black and bypass the switch for testing purposes?

How do the fuses look?  Good, or blown?  If blown: in the center or at the end cap?

Thx, -K

There's only one fuse on the 500 so it will be easy to check. I think it's good though. I'm reading 12+ volts on the red wire going to the ignition switch.
Tomorrow I'm dismantling the kill switch or just bypassing it and putting a toggle in.
Not elegant, but I'm on a budget.
Off to bed for me. I need to be up in 5 hours.

IT'S ALIVE!!!!!!
I bypassed the kill switch, got the carbs on, and got it started on the 4th kick!!!!
Still lots to do. Lights aren't working, #4 float seems to be sticking, and all the general tune up stuff.
It's runs though. That's something that this bike has not done in a long time.
The motad exhaust sounds nice and mellow too.
