looking for CB450 owners (or used to be owners)
« on: March 21, 2011, 10:05:29 AM »
Hey guys. So I got a late start on my 350F project and now that the weather is looking better and better I need something to ride.... great excuse to buy another bike ;)

I've been looking at a lot of Honda 450s, one a 71 CL and the other a 75 CB.

What do you guys know about these bikes? Pros and cons as compared to other 70's era Hondas?

I have probably owned at least 10 over the years.  Excellent bike, although a bit top heavy, carbs can be finicky and motor is a bit complicated for one without any mechanical background.  Good power for the size, used to run right with the old Brit 650's, readily available parts, the design makes for a good basis if cafe is your style. I miss having one but pretty much out of room for another bike.

I am pretty sure 74 was the last year for 450-if the one you are looking at is a 75 it would be a 500.  Check this link for year info http://www.motorera.com/honda/h0450/sport/sport.htm...Larry

Ace bikes - developed mine very heavily for racing and it was sweet sweet sweet!
They are complex compared only to an SOHC but they're a double knocker so you get something interesting for the complexity. Otherwise they are delightfully easy to work on and tune. Buy it - you'll never look back!

Some parts are getting rare nowadays like gearbox bearings but they can still be found. Good luck!
