HELP! cb500 + motionpro clutch cable= no clutch
« on: October 08, 2010, 12:29:10 PM »
I just installed a new motionpro clutch cable, adjusted it (i believe) correctly and now the cam action doesn't seem to be engaging the pushrod whatsoever.  at first i thought that the small ball bearing at theend of the pushrod was missing, but it seems functional.
Short of disassembling the right side crankcase and diving into the clutch, which btw worked before the old clutch cable broke, what could be causing this clutch malfunction?

The locating nut you have on the inside of the cover should be outside and inverted. At the end of the cable, there is the adjuster, the locking nut and that threaded locator that fits inside the hole in the cover from the top.

the threaded locator as you name it does not fit inside the hole in the cover, it will take me a couple days to get the piece ground down to the correct  diameter. I do not think this will fix the problem because as you can see by the two pictures, even with the cable adjuster installed incorrectly, the cam action is moving through the correct range of motion.  i 'll check back in when i am able to grind down the threaded locator.

I installed one of these cables several months ago. I had the same issue with the threaded nut. I robbed one off of a stock (but broken) cable that I had.
Even when adjusted correctly, the lever was very stiff. I ordered a genuine Honda cable and unpacked it today. I bet it's a good 5" shorter than the MotionPro cable. I hope to have it all back together this evening.

On a side note, I had the same experience with the MP throttle cable. I actually ran out of adjustment and it was STILL too long.
I spent ~$43 on a Honda throttle cable and around $30 for a Honda clutch cable. Expensive? A little, but not as expensive as throwing away $30 on the MP crap.

Wait until you feel the difference in the easier pull/smoother action with the Honda cable.

Got it on tonight. Need to ride it a bit and make final adjustments, but there's DEFINITELY a difference. For the better.

Ezranz, did you slacken the clutch adjuster on the right hand side of the motor before fitting the new cable, if you didn't it will be adjusted for the old streached cable.
Try slackening everything that adjusts the cable and then work your way up from the clutch adjuster nut/lower cable adjuster/handlebar cable adjuster. :)

Looks like they stock one cable and sell it for 500 and 550?
Looks like a 550 cable to me

What is it with Motion Pro? Haven't they ever seen a measuring tape? How hard could it be to get the length right?

I agree about the quality difference.  I put a new MP clutch cable on my 750, and man is it stiff.  However if I ride Fabricator's bike it's like night and day easy to pull.
