WTF? how to kill a counter shaft seal on a cb500. UPDATE
« on: October 12, 2010, 10:39:56 AM »
so i have been chasing down a nasty oil leak, ive done it all... oil pump, oil pressure switch, shifter seal, neutral switch, oil pan o-ring. and for the life of me i couldnt get it to stop. instead it got much worse. so i finally get to pulling the front sprocket so as to check the counter shaft (am i using the right terminology here?) and to my suprise i find this #$%*er

it managed to work its way under the seal... a friggin plastic bag. couldnt have been there to long, i changed the chain about 6 weeks ago and havent put much mileage on her due to the leak. so woo #$%*ing hoo, wish me luck, as i havent heard of to many success storys with this seal!

*update*
so i got the seal out, not very easy, but it came out. and to my suprise, i found more of the #$%*ing bag under the seal. then more of it between the bearing and the counter shaft. i started to pull some of it out, but of course im not going to get it all out. no the question of the day, am i #$%*ed? should i just run it and pray?

Don't use the wood screw method! I did and screwed in the metal bearing ball retainer and pulled both seal and retainer out! .. FAIL.... Use a metal hook with handle!

I have not done that exact seal, but I would recommend using two hooks.  One on each side and wiggle it out slowly.

Have you tried to work the plastic out of the seal? Maybe unwinding it in a counter-clockwise direction? The seal itself may be OK.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

you can drop the pan and see if any of the plastic bag can be gotten at from there, look close dont just tear at it you might be able to wind shafts over a bit and retrieve more of it that way.,id try and get it all out,it might not hurt hard parts like gears but if it gets sucked into the oil pump it could be dodgy.unlucky fluke of a thing!

well lucky me, i got all the bag out. woo-hoo. and the new seal went in with ease. Now i read somewhere on hear that this should have had a lip for the seal. but i found the opposite, mine has a chamfer? opinions? i ordered 2 seals thinkin it was gonna be challenging, but it was easier than the shifter seal!

Dave500, i know about bags and exhaust! my dad has an old porsche 930 with a chevy 350 crammed in it, crazy exhaust system on it that we call the bag catcher, and when you do catch a bag its usually pull over and have a beer cause its gonna stink for a while! glad you missed that one!
