Carpy Exhaust Advice - RESOLVED
« on: October 12, 2010, 03:36:05 PM »
So, I recently received my Carpy 4 to 1 exhaust for my K8.  I paid 450 + 65(shipping).  I opened the box and noticed scratches!

The biggest one:

More smaller ones:

I emailed him immediately and he said to return it.  I wanted more details on the return...like...
1. who's paying for the return?
2. will i be shipped another one without another $65 fee?
3. maybe i can live with it if he refunds a portion of my money?

I guess he wants me to eat the shipping fee (I'd be $130 (65 + 65) in shipping fees!) and I'd still be out of an exhaust.

I can post the entire email thread if needed.

What do you think?  I know the guy isn't walmart but I guess I wanted a little more done.  And the kicker is I was planning on buying some other cool stuff he sells, but now I'm really nervous.

Thoughts?  Suggestions?

****UPDATE****
Well, Carpy and I exchanged a bunch of emails and he said he would give me a discount.  I stated that he could decided what the discount was and he suggested $75.  I agreed.

I understand Carpy isn't walmart and wish the whole thing went smoother.  However he did try to fix the situation.

Now, would I buy from him again...well, I went from "no" to "maybe".  Everyone deserves a second chance!

I would e-mail him back and ask him the details. Another option would be to get some high temp flat black and touch it up w/ a small brush.

did those scratches happen in transit? would be crazy if they were sent out that way.

He told me the details...ship it back (I pay shipping, not him) and that's that.

Once you touch up he is off the hook any thing over $100.00 I pay for insurance that does not look like shipping damage.

I guess so.  I pulled it out of the box and VIOLA...scratches were there.  The box wasn't in rough shape and I'm not accusing him of shipping them to me like this.  He said "oh well, i guess one out of 400 pipes is not too bad I guess. Sorry it had to be you."

That's too bad.  I have ordered from him a couple times without incident.  I hope he isn't getting too big for his britches...
+1 on the touch-up.  Saves you $65 and shipping time.
It took 10 years but she's finally done!

That's BS. When I received a dented pipe from David Silver Spares, they took care of everything. Nothing like great customer service to make you keep coming back. I'll never go back to Carpy. He makes it sound like it's your fault. "Just send it back" Like that was free or something.

The email discussion I had with him makes me believe that he thinks I damaged them somehow.  And that's the thing, I want to keep buying stuff off him...he has nice products...but now i'm skeered.

If you scratched them its your bad. If they were scratched in transit  i think you can file a claim. If he sent them out scratched then he should eat the shipping. Thats called customer service if he knows what that is. Im sure better business bureau could always help. But next time dont buy from carpy. he is basically a middle man for most of his parts. Those exhaust can be had from the guy who made them on ebay or contact him from a thread on this forum. Other stuff like his "CAFE RACER STAINLESS GAS CAP"  for $85, or Led lights, or rear sets to name a few can be found on the web for a fraction of the price. Sucks that your item got scratched and it would be nice to see one of these Cafe Dealers step up and bite the bullet to provide good service. But the more i read the more it seams they are providing poor service and craftsmanship and just riding the wave of the home grown cafe.

Try calling him instead of emailing. A bit more personal then.

This made me laugh for some reason.

But yeah, call/email him and ask all the questions you asked here.  Don't work yourself up until you have all the answers - he may very well make it all right.

I hope so...custom guys and their quality seems to be crashing recently...

He seems to be crashing and burning. Last week he seemed to have put everything he owned for the past twenty years in his attic on ebay for sale. These are tough times for lots of people. Nevertheless, you should not have to pay 65 bucks shipping for damaged goods, period. "Fool you once, shame on him, fool you twice shame on you" or words to that affect.

Well that's just it, isn't it?  As far as I can see from what was posted, he hasn't actually confirmed that he has to eat the shipping back.  That's why I said to check before getting all worked up..

BTW, what is he listed under on Ebay?  Didn't see anything when I searched "carpy."

His Ebay name is hotrodcarpy.  FWIW he has is rated 100% on 1833 transactions (nothing listed currently).  Like I said, I've never had a problem with him.  He even sent me a free motorcycle magazine once.

-Rick

Thanks rick.  When I ordered the exhaust, I called him first.  We talked for a few minutes, then I ordered off his site.  He was very helpful.
After I received the part, I emailed and told him it was scratched.  The first response was "bloody hell, send it back".  I don't feel I should have to pay shipping.  I figured the exhaust would get scratched after riding a few hundred miles too...so maybe I could live with the scratches if he would refund a small portion of my money...like $65 for another shipping fee?  I dunno.  I was hoping for something.  Anyway, the then asked for pics so he could show the shipping company.  I sent him pics...the same ones i posted on this thread.  He got them and then wanted pics of the box.  There's nothing on the box that say "oh #$%*, the shipping company was a fault" so I sent him an email stating the pics of the box wont do any good but I could send them anyway.  I suggested a partial refund...he just told me that he never has had an issue with shipping before.

I'm not sure a phone call would do any good.

Asking for a partial refund always seams a little shady to me. Its logical, i know, but the thing to do is if its wrong send it back and get the right stuff.

I figured this might make him suspicious.  However, he just said "ship it back" and nothing else.  I figured, at a minimum, I could always get a refund and be out $130 in shipping fees.  However, that's not what I wanted so I figured I'd make the suggestion.  I had no problem paying him his full price after a 5 minute phone conversation.  I'd rather have a perfect exhaust than 50...100...150 refund that he may offer.  But I figured I could save us all some work by making that suggestion.

I dunno, Zorro...it is starting to sound like you're really just trying to get something for nothing.

Just call Carpy and flat-out ask for a call tag.  He's asking for evidence of shipping damage so that he's not out money, just like you're trying to make sure you're not getting shorted on damaged goods.  Any company that ships is going to do that - f UPS banged it around, they're going to have to pay Carpy and then he can replace your goods.  If it's not the shipping company, he seems to want you to send them back so that he can fix it himself.  If that's what it needs, there is nothing unreasonable about asking him to pay for the shipping.  The worst he can say is no.

If he does say no, then fight it.  Just saying, "Oh, it's gonna get bing'd up while riding anyway, no big deal - just give me some money back" in advance really doesn't make a business guy want to help you.  It says, "They're just trying to rip me off."

Find out what he's willing to do, ask for return round-trip shipping and see what he has to say.

I understand your point of view.  The pics were sent...and I posted them.  There's obvious scratches...I wouldn't want the headache of trying to screw him out of $100 by making a scratch myself...or photoshopping a scratch.  I'm an honest buyer.

He emailed me and said "Well I think we shall both be out of pocket on that. I have made another 20 more sets and fitted 5 today to bikes with no issues and all in boxes, so i have no idea how they got scratched."

on a previous email, he said:
"I guess you will have to send the exhausts back then, shame as I did not scratch them.
i will refund you.
Dont want to se send any more incase they get scratched again."

I believe this last quote means he's done dealing with me.
