Mine Recue in Chile

Anyone else following this? Facinating stuff. Sure hope it goes/ends well. My hat's off to all 33 of them. I would gone out of my gourd 60+ days ago.

I've been keeping an eye and an ear on this one Bob.

Listening to the early morning news here they were saying that it was hoped that they would start bringing the trapped miners to the surface in a couple of hours.

One by one in a rescue capsule.

You may remember the Beaconsfield Mine collapse in Tasmania in 2006.

Seeing those 2 guys immediately after the rescue on TV bought on an indescribable feeling.

I worry for the guy who, when they thought all the miners had been killed, his wife AND his mistress both turned up at the mine to mourn? If I was him, I think I'd rather stay underground! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

How about the guy they put on a diet as they know he could not fit in the tube. What a bummer that would be to not fit...They said it was 21 inches wide. Who could fit in 21 inches? I guess if you squash your shoulders together it will work. Supposed to take 20 minutes for each ride from the bottom (2,300 feet). Bless those rescue workers...

I just measured the distance from one shoulder to the other, 26 inches. I guess a career in mining is not in my future John........  :o

I find it amazing how they drill the holes and keep them on target.  In northern Minnesota we have Soudan Mine State Park and they take you down in a tiny elevator on a big steel cable for 2341 feet and then a ride on a small tram out one of the horizontal shafts.  Then they turn out the lights for a bit. :D

I heard they were fighting about the order in which they were getting out.  Fighting over who was going to be last!

there has to be at least 2 cables.. right.. ???

And there is a brake on it yes.... ???

And they have something in it if it starts scraping.. like Weinerschlider, or maybe capsule slider...

Hope they dont get "supposittrauphobic... on the way up..

If it was China, they would have just sent down a bosuns chair, on a MADE IN CHINA roope..

Apparently if it gets stuck, the guy in the capsule can actually get out through the bottom and winch himself back down? Interesting! ;D

I wouldn't be a bit surprised; those boys are a tough bunch. None wanted to be the first out, and none wanted to be whisked off to hospital until they were ALL out...

2 months!!!
Thanks for the video, Mick!
Terry, when I first heard the capsule was 21", I also measured my shoulders; about 19-20". I would fit, but I sure as hell wouldn't want to have to!

my granddad was a pensylvania coal miner,my dad was hardrock miner(sandhog under nyc)I went down with my dad at 18 to see if I had the stuff to do it.F that,my job was to shovel mud in buckets and keep the dog sized rats at bay. That was enough for me.got paid real well for 1 day of work, but I knew I couldnt do that sh*t.
its better to regret something you have done, than something you havent.Except playing with explosives.

Now just the volunteers who went down to help. I can only imagine the last man's wait, alone, for that capsule to come back.  :-\

Now that's a bit of a buzz-kill, Bob. I hadn't thought about the last man out...
On second thought, think of the feeling he will have, helping rescue those guys, and knowing no man was left behind. ;D
