Now that's a bit of a buzz-kill, Bob. I hadn't thought about the last man out...
On second thought, think of the feeling he will have, helping rescue those guys, and knowing no man was left behind. ;D

I watched that last extraction, turns out the last man out was the first in. Great outcome all around. A welcome change from the usual menu of of bad news we hear about. If Chile has something like the Smithsonian, the capsule deserves a spot there.  ;)
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

At 5am this morning, I turned on the TV to check last nights lottery results, (well I sure as hell was not going to go to work if I had won;D ;D ;D) anyway, pictures of the miners and the guys that went down there to assist them were on the news.
As each one came to the surface, I was quite surprised that most had quite short hair, were clean, well shaven and groomed and wearing clean clothes, it was if it were stage managed. ;D ;D ;D anyway, I'm well pleased that they all got out safe and in one piece, seems there is a GOD afterall. ;)

Those miners sure are lucky they're Chileans. Had they been russians or ukrainians; their company and gv,ment would just leave the poor f*ckers down there.

There's something ironic in that, Sam, especially you being 64 with only one more year to go before you can put you feet up. :D
Wonder who won last Friday's £112M Euro Lottery?

Actually, I found one of the more uplifting aspects of the whole thing was the true, multi-national effort that included Chile, Australia, Canada and the U.S. and I suspect others. It would be nice if we could engage others to apply that to other world problems.

P.S. That was a social statement, not a political statement.

Well said Bob. I was just thinking about the same thing.  It is frustrating  to me how a world that can do great things if we all would just work together tends to be so petty and divisive. Again, I don't consider that to be a political statement either. Though it sure shines through in politics a lot. :-\

My sentiments exactly Bob.
This effort has highlighted beyond any doubt that working and cooperating together as a unit is proof to the world of what is positively achievable.
Here's hoping.

They said it was an oil rig drill that made the hole, interesting. There were 3 holes being drilled, the one used just got there first. how in the world did they hit the cavity in the right place?

COPIAPO, CHILE (The Borowitz Report) - Television viewers worldwide who have been riveted by the unfolding drama of the Chilean miners' rescue were stunned this afternoon by the sight of Michaele and Tareq Salahi emerging from the mine.

Mr. and Mrs. Salahi, who are perhaps best known for crashing a state dinner at the White House last year, waved to cameras as they emerged, Mrs. Salahi attired in her trademark floor-length red dress.

At the mine site, officials were scrambling to determine precisely how the Salahis had made their way down into the mine in time to grab the attention of a global television audience.

"To our knowledge, this is the first example of mine-crashing on record," said Chilean official Vincenzo Alejandro Mineros. "Clearly, this is one aspect of mine security we hadn't considered."
 ;D ;D

we used to use a little camera that took a photo of a compass/inclinometer lowered into the tubes, every so many few metres, and plot the hole ,these days itll be a lot easier with modern location devices.you can also steer the drill head somewhat with pressure or drill speed.google longyear drilling,or boart longyear.
